Discover the unexpected effects of eating 1 bowl of beans every day

The study, conducted by scientists at the Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), included 72 pre-diabetic patients, monitored for 12 weeks, to study the impact of eating beans daily on cholesterol and inflammation in people at risk of heart disease or diabetes.

Prediabetic patients often have impaired lipid metabolism and chronic low-grade inflammation, both of which may contribute to heart disease and diabetes.

The study was conducted with participants in free-living conditions. Here, they were randomly assigned to eat 1 cup of black beans, chickpeas, or rice (as a control) every day for 12 weeks.

Participants had blood tests at the start of the study, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks later to monitor cholesterol, inflammation, and blood sugar levels; and at the beginning and end of the study, they also had glucose tolerance tests.

Regular consumption of beans significantly reduces cholesterol

Results found that regular bean consumption significantly reduced cholesterol and inflammation in prediabetics. Chickpeas significantly reduced cholesterol levels, while black beans reduced inflammation.

Specifically, eating 1 cup of chickpeas every day significantly reduced total cholesterol levels - from 200.4 mg/dL at the beginning of the study to 185.8 mg/dL after 12 weeks, according to the medical news site News Medical.

Eating 1 cup of black beans per day significantly reduced levels of the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 — a marker of inflammation — from 2.57 pg/ml at baseline to 1.88 pg/ml after 12 weeks.

“This study shows that there are benefits to bean consumption in people with prediabetes, and that these benefits apply to everyone,” said one of the study’s lead authors, Morganne Smith, a professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology. “These findings could be used to prevent heart disease and diabetes.”

Researchers say that replacing less healthy options with beans is a great place to start. But be mindful of added salt or sugar, according to News Medical.
