Việt NamViệt Nam31/12/1969

According to Mr. Tran Hoang Phong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tan Phuoc district, in order to promote the potential and strengths of pineapple in Dong Thap Muoi region, the People's Committee of Tan Phuoc district has planned a concentrated specialized cultivation area in the communes of Hung Thanh, My Phuoc, Thanh My, Thanh Tan, Tan Hoa Dong... Investment in completing traffic and irrigation infrastructure to serve production is focused on, in order to ensure the effectiveness of specialized cultivation areas, adapt to climate change, and mitigate natural disasters.

Specifically, to protect specialized areas according to the policy of "living with floods", Tan Phuoc district has built nearly 800km of dykes combined with developing sub-regional and regional connectivity, completing 131 dyke boxes, protecting about 15,400 hectares of pineapples, more than 3,000 hectares of fruit trees and other crops. At the same time, investing in installing 198 electric pumping stations to pump for flood control, drainage, drought and salinity prevention when necessary. On the other hand, to improve the efficiency of endemic crops in the Dong Thap Muoi region, Tan Phuoc district focuses on transferring science and technology, restoring pineapple varieties, and introducing new varieties such as MD 2 pineapple variety with many outstanding advantages into production to increase productivity, output and quality of agricultural products.

Since the beginning of the year, Tan Phuoc district has organized about 180 agricultural science and technology transfer sessions for nearly 4,500 farmers in specialized areas; mainly guiding people on intensive farming techniques, selecting good varieties, renovating and rejuvenating pineapple gardens, and handling fruit in different seasons to have products harvested all year round...

Currently, with the technique of handling fruit in different seasons, which has been summarized and transferred by the Department of Agriculture and widely applied by farmers in Dong Thap Muoi, it has created a revolution in the field of intensive cultivation of specialty crops. Thanks to that, Tan Phuoc pineapple can be harvested almost all year round. From there, the risk of "good harvest, low price" is reduced, farmers are assured to promote production and intensive cultivation. Dong Thap Muoi pineapple is consumed smoothly, sold at high prices, farmers in the newly reclaimed land are very excited. Recently, the local attention has also helped to increase the value and brand of Tan Phuoc pineapple. From fresh pineapple, people in Dong Thap Muoi region process many high-value products such as pineapple candy, pineapple juice, soft drinks... to serve the market.

Mr. Tran Hoang Phong, Chairman of Tan Phuoc District People's Committee, said that currently, local pineapple farmers are very excited because the pineapple crop is good, the price is good, the income is high, and life is stable.

Specifically, in 2024, pineapple prices will always be at 9,500 VND/kg or more, sometimes up to 11,000 VND/kg, double the previous year. With this price, farmers will achieve a production value of about 200 million VND/ha, after deducting costs, they will still make a profit of over 100 million VND, the highest among the main crops in the Dong Thap Muoi region.

According to a report by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tan Phuoc district, in the past 10 months, local farmers have harvested over 12,400 hectares of pineapple, with an average yield of 20.4 tons/ha and an output of nearly 254,000 tons of fruit supplied to the market.

As a crop endemic to the Dong Thap Muoi region, farmers in Tan Phuoc district have reclaimed and planted nearly 15,400 hectares of specialized pineapple, each year yielding about 300,000 tons, the largest in the Tien River region. The advantage of pineapple is that it is suitable for the soil of the Dong Thap Muoi alum-contaminated land, giving high productivity, yield and favorable output. Thanks to specialized pineapple, many farmers after a few years of bumper crops have built a solid foundation, becoming billionaires in the formerly barren Dong Thap Muoi region.

A typical example is farmer Nguyen Van Dien, residing in My Phuoc town, Tan Phuoc district. Coming to settle in Dong Thap Muoi 20 years ago, he reclaimed land and planted 5 hectares of pineapple. Thanks to the intensive farming techniques transferred by the Agricultural Service Center, he has achieved an average yield of 25 tons/ha - the highest in the region. Each year, he produces about 100 tons of commercial pineapple, selling for about half a billion VND after deducting expenses. In addition, he also creates regular jobs for dozens of local workers.

Farmer Nguyen Thanh Hien, residing in Phu My commune, Tan Phuoc district, was honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of Tien Giang Provincial People's Committee last year for his achievements as an outstanding farmer in production and business in the province. He shared that after many years of reclaiming and restoring the Dong Thap Muoi region, he owns 11 hectares of cultivated land including 4 hectares of pineapple, 5 hectares of taro, and 2 hectares of sticky rice. On average, he earns about 1.15 billion VND per year; with a family of 5, the average income per capita is 230 million VND/year. This is one of the very high income levels in Tien Giang province today.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hien assessed that with many years of experience in intensive farming, this year, Dong Thap Muoi pineapple has always kept a high price because of the large market demand, at the same time, farmers in specialized areas are interested in applying scientific and technical measures in intensive farming, so they have increased productivity, output and ensured the quality of agricultural products, which are favored by consumers, affirming the brand of specialty crops in Dong Thap Muoi. In addition, linking production according to the value chain with the active participation of specialized farmers, cooperatives, enterprises and traders has also helped solve the output, bringing the local pineapple brand to a higher level. For example, recently, Phu My Trade - Service - Agriculture Cooperative, of which he is the Director, signed a contract to link production and consumption of pineapple with Minh Hung pineapple warehouse, farmers sold at an average price of 500 VND/kg higher than the market, people were very excited. From there, opening up a new future for the sustainable development of Tan Phuoc specialized pineapple area in the current context of integration.
