Developing the marine economy - a driving force for sustainable development in the Mekong Delta.

(CT) - On June 27th, in Kien Giang province, Can Tho University, in coordination with the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, organized a June 2025 seminar on the theme "Developing the marine economy - a driving force for sustainable development in the Mekong Delta" in both in-person and online formats. This is a regular quarterly activity within the framework of the Sustainable Development Program for the Mekong Delta Vision 2045 - SDMD 2045.

Speaking at the event, Professor Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the University Council of Can Tho University, emphasized: The Party and State of Vietnam have very clear strategic orientations on the development of the marine economy, as expressed in Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW dated October 22, 2018, of the Central Committee on the strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy until 2030, with a vision to 2045. This resolution stipulates that "Vietnam should strive to become a strong maritime nation, with sustainable development, prosperity, security, and safety in the maritime sector." Resolution No. 13-NQ/TW dated April 2, 2022, of the Politburo on the direction of socio -economic development and ensuring national defense and security in the Mekong Delta region until 2030, with a vision to 2045, continues to affirm the key role of the marine economy, with Kien Giang being one of the strategic areas that need priority investment and development. Today's seminar is a place to connect intellectuals, managers, and businesses to jointly propose concrete solutions, transforming vision into action and potential into real driving force for development.

At the workshop, delegates exchanged and discussed many issues related to the potential and strategic value of the marine economy for the Mekong Delta region and the whole country; Vietnam's marine economic development strategy; aquaculture and seafood exploitation: a driving force for marine economic development; maritime transport and logistics: new opportunities for the development of the Mekong Delta's marine economy; and the development of green and sustainable marine tourism

The SDMD 2045 Forum, implemented under the Government's policy and chaired by Can Tho University since 2022, aims to connect domestic and international stakeholders, contribute to proposing directions and solutions, and promote cooperation to build and implement practical programs and projects for the sustainable development of the Mekong Delta.
