On the afternoon of January 6, Hue Central Hospital announced that its doctors had successfully performed surgery to remove a dangerous foreign object in the esophagus, helping to save the life of patient LTV (born in 1998, residing in Xuan Phu ward, Thuan Hoa district, Hue city).
Previously, while eating porridge, patient Le TV accidentally swallowed a piece of pig bone. In the following days, the patient could not eat or drink anything. Due to difficult family circumstances, patient V. did not go to the hospital for examination after swallowing the foreign object.
Due to severe pain in the throat, inability to eat or drink, and difficulty breathing, patient LTV was then transferred to Hue Central Hospital by his family for emergency treatment. Through clinical examination, neck CT scan, and flexible esophageal endoscopy, doctors discovered a foreign object, a piece of pig bone, in the patient's esophagus. This foreign object could perforate the esophagus and cause serious damage to surrounding organs.
Immediately, patient V. was transferred to the operating room to undergo rigid esophagoscopy to remove the foreign object under anesthesia. After more than 1 hour of surgery, the doctors removed the foreign object, a sharp-pointed pig bone, measuring 30 x 41mm, located in the patient's thoracic esophagus.
After surgery, patient LTV's health is gradually recovering, the patient can eat porridge and continues to be monitored by the doctor.
According to doctors at Hue Central Hospital, if foreign bodies in the digestive tract are not detected and treated promptly, they can lead to many dangerous complications such as esophageal perforation, esophageal abscess, mediastinitis, damage to large blood vessels in the chest, gastrointestinal bleeding, airway obstruction, or widespread infection that threatens the patient's life.
Therefore, doctors recommend that people should be careful when eating, especially with foods containing small bones, hard shells or easily swallowed objects such as toothpicks or metal. In case of feeling abnormal after eating, they should immediately go to medical facilities for examination and early intervention.
