This past weekend, from May 29-31, Xuan Lan's film "Underworld Beauty Salon" officially had its final screenings.
As of June 1st, the film had no more screenings in theaters nationwide, according to statistics from Box Office Vietnam and online ticketing platforms. Ultimately, the film only grossed 12.6 billion VND after nearly a month since its release.
Besides the short run time in theaters (an average of 2 months or longer), this revenue figure is considered a loss both before and after deducting the fees payable to theater owners.
"Underworld Beauty Salon" is directed by Nguyen Huu Hoang. He is one of the youngest commercial filmmakers in the horror genre today (born in 1991), having directed films such as "Killer Lens" (2018) , "Parallel" (2021), and the most successful one, "Ghost of the Underworld" (2024), which grossed 127 billion VND.
The film was shot in Da Lat to create a gloomy and heavy atmosphere.
In terms of plot, "Underworld Beauty Salon" follows Thanh (Ngoc Trinh), a young doctor who accepts a job at Mrs. Xuan's (Xuan Lan) beauty salon to earn money and save her comatose lover.
However, instead of undergoing conventional surgeries, she had to accept the dark arts of yin and yang. It is from this point that many dark and mysterious secrets about Xuan Lan's character gradually begin to be revealed.
The film is criticized for its compelling premise and humanistic message about the obsession with beauty and youth, but it overuses jump scares, visuals, and sounds instead of addressing genuine psychological trauma.

Consequently, the film left many viewers feeling that it was overly ambitious in terms of its message, pressured to create a humanistic meaning after a film full of scares, resulting in an overload of details while the script lacked coherence and the main character's development was unconvincing.
With low revenue, this is considered the third box office failure for Xuan Lan as an actress or actress-producer.
Earlier in May, during the promotional and launch of "The Happy Beauty Salon," she shared that she had to sell her house due to losses of 30 billion VND from two films: "The Price of Happiness" (2024, only grossing about 23 billion VND) and the romantic comedy "Marrying My Father" (2025, only about 10 billion VND).../.
