Vietnamese TV dramas are in decline.

Once an indispensable source of entertainment for Vietnamese viewers every evening, television dramas are now gradually losing their prominence.

Films that once caused a sensation on social media, such as "The Taste of Family Love," "The Sunny Day," "Go Home, My Son," or more recently " The Lone Path," "Walking Amidst the Brilliant Sky ," etc., are now unlikely to reappear. New projects like "Dusty Roads," "My Father, the One Who Stays Behind," "Rainbow on the Horizon," or currently airing films like "There's You There, Peaceful," "Wind Across the Blue Sky," "One Millimeter Away From You ," despite featuring popular and talented actors, have yet to create the same frenzy as during their heyday.

According to statistics, television viewership is steadily declining each year, with a large number of viewers shifting to platforms like Netflix and YouTube. This is not only a change in entertainment habits but also a major challenge for Vietnamese television dramas. With more choices, viewers are becoming more discerning about content, acting, and production techniques. In this race, television dramas are falling behind compared to online products that are more concise, engaging, and modern. In a recent interview, People's Artist Khai Hung, former director of the Vietnam Television Film Center (VFC), stated that the television drama trend is downward; the filmmaking formulas lack novelty; and the actors are very familiar faces from years past.

However, content is clearly the key issue. Many directors and screenwriters admit that current Vietnamese television scripts lack depth, are predictable, and repeat old motifs. Social conflicts and character psychology lack the depth to evoke emotion, making it difficult for viewers to stay engaged for long. Constant production pressure, tight deadlines, and limited budgets also lead to a decline in the quality of each episode. Many films still select actors based on their social media popularity rather than their acting ability.

Nevertheless, it's undeniable that Vietnamese television is still striving for change. VTV has added a new time slot from 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM to experiment with and create a viewing habit that suits modern lifestyles. Simultaneously, they are expanding and exploring more relatable, humane, and everyday themes. The VTV Ratings system was created to measure audience interest across multiple platforms, providing accurate data to adjust broadcasting strategies. However, these innovations have yet to create a breakthrough for television dramas.

The reality is that television dramas are being affected by audience fragmentation. Young viewers have less patience to watch long series, while middle-aged viewers are increasingly switching to rewatching via apps or other platforms. The long, slow-paced structure and lack of climaxes make it easy for viewers to abandon the series. A lack of effective marketing strategies and weak social media promotion further hinder the spread of these shows, preventing them from generating the same level of excitement after each episode as before.

Therefore, to restore its appeal, Vietnamese television dramas need a comprehensive transformation. First and foremost, the script must be the foundation: instead of similar stories, they need to explore social conflicts and human psychology more realistically and deeply. The genres also need to expand to include crime, horror, historical, or fantasy to refresh viewers' tastes. Production techniques must be upgraded, as today's audience is accustomed to high-quality visuals. Actors need to be properly trained and selected based on their suitability for the role, rather than just their popularity. Along with that, smart marketing and audience data will be key to helping Vietnamese dramas reach the right audience and create a stronger impact. In the fiercely competitive entertainment market, only by daring to innovate and touching upon real stories can Vietnamese television dramas continue to create sensations.
