Speaking with VietNamNet reporter, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien, Deputy Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that one of the new points of this year's admission regulations is that schools must announce the rules for converting equivalent scores between methods and combinations.

Regarding the conversion of equivalent scores, Mr. Dien said, “it is not as complicated and difficult to understand as many people imagine”. However, he noted the concept of “review score”, which is not the exam score but the process of calculating the exam score into the review score. Each method will produce a different review score.

For example, some schools consider admission based on high school graduation exam scores, major subjects multiplied by a coefficient of 2 or 3, plus bonus points, priority points by region/subject... calculated into scores on a scale of 40, even 50.

Or some schools use multiple scores such as transcript scores, high school graduation exam scores, international certificate conversion scores, competency assessment scores... for a combined admission method, at which point the scoring formula will be more complicated.

Then, the equivalent conversion will be based on the review score.

Mr. Dien said that from 2022, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will maintain stability in 3 admission methods: Talent admission, Admission based on thinking assessment test scores and Admission based on high school graduation exam scores.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology plans to convert the equivalent of the admission scores of the Talent Admission method and Admission based on thinking assessment test scores to the admission scores based on high school graduation exam scores through the formula: y = ax + b.

For example, y is the equivalent conversion score from the thinking assessment test score (scale of 100); x is the score based on the high school exam score (scale of 30); a, b are the conversion coefficients.

The coefficients a and b have constant values within a range of scores determined by the school. Candidates whose scores fall within a range will be able to look up the specific coefficients a and b to calculate the conversion. The values of coefficients a and b and the number of score ranges within a range are calculated and announced by the schools (in the form of a table) and usually fluctuate from 3-4 ranges based on the score distribution of previous years.

According to Mr. Dien, determining the value of conversion coefficients and dividing the range must be based on a number of factors such as: The distribution of high school graduation exam scores of candidates, the school's priority method (abundant initial recruitment sources), the recruitment quality of the applied method (university learning results of students recruited for a number of years).

“Hanoi University of Science and Technology plans to divide the scores into 4 ranges. Coefficients a and b will be determined when the 2025 high school graduation exam score range is officially available,” said Mr. Dien.

Mr. Dien said that recently, Hanoi University of Science and Technology processed the learning outcomes data of students of 4 courses admitted by each method at the school from 2021 to 2024. The evaluation results are based on CPA scores (students' cumulative average score from the time of admission to the time of survey).

The results show that for the K67 student cohort (enrolled in 2022), the average CPA of students admitted by the Talent Selection method is 2.77/4; the Thinking Assessment Test Score Selection method is 2.59/4 and the High School Graduation Exam Score Selection method is 2.27/4.

For K68 (enrollment in 2023), the results are 2.73/4; 2.49/4 and 2.22/4 respectively.

For K69 (enrollment year 2024), just admitted to the school and completed 1 semester, the results are 2.59/4; 2.33/4 and 1.95/4 respectively.

"These figures partly show the picture of input quality according to the methods. Thus, candidates who are considered for talent or have scores on thinking assessment tests may have a slight advantage," said Mr. Dien.

However, Mr. Dien also said that schools need to consider the conversion coefficients in the most equitable way so that all candidates have the opportunity to be admitted. This avoids the situation where candidates from remote and disadvantaged areas do not have the opportunity to participate in capacity assessment exams, thinking assessment exams, international certificates... but schools give too much priority, taking high conversion coefficients for these methods, thereby reducing the students' chances of being admitted.

How does the Ministry of Education and Training plan to convert university admission scores? The Ministry of Education and Training requires that the rules for converting equivalent scores must be simple, easy to understand, and convenient to apply.
University admission timelines for 2025 Starting from July 16, candidates will register, adjust, and add to their university admission wishes an unlimited number of times. Registration of admission wishes must be done online.
