Dr. Hoang Nam, from the Gastroenterology Department at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi , stated that excessive alcohol consumption, irregular eating habits, and heavy smoking during Tet (Lunar New Year) are common causes of acute pancreatitis hospitalizations. Patients who change their diet, stop drinking alcohol, and receive treatment can recover from acute pancreatitis within a few days. Without treatment, the condition can become chronic.
Doctor Nam suggests the following methods to protect the pancreas and reduce the risk of acute pancreatitis during this time.
Limit alcohol consumption.
According to Dr. Hoang Nam, alcohol is the second most common cause of acute pancreatitis after gallstones and the leading cause of chronic pancreatitis, accounting for 40-70% of all cases. Limiting or stopping alcohol consumption helps protect the pancreas from the harmful effects of these beverages, thereby reducing the risk of developing the disease.
Choose foods that are good for your heart.
High levels of fat in the blood can increase the risk of acute pancreatitis. Prioritizing heart-healthy foods, including whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and avoiding fatty or fried foods, can help prevent acute pancreatitis.
Gallstones are also a leading cause of acute pancreatitis. People should limit foods high in cholesterol to prevent its accumulation in the bile ducts, which can lead to gallstone formation.

Do exercise
Eating a balanced, low-fat diet and engaging in regular physical activity during Tet (Lunar New Year) is beneficial for health. Maintaining a stable weight helps the pancreas function better, reducing several risk factors for pancreatitis, including gallstones, obesity, and diabetes.
Eat your meals on time.
Irregular eating habits during Tet (Lunar New Year) put pressure on the digestive system. Skipping meals can lead to rapid weight loss. The liver increases cholesterol production to compensate, raising the risk of gallstones and acute pancreatitis.
Do not smoke.
Smoking also increases the risk of pancreatitis. Approximately 20-30% of pancreatic cancer cases are linked to tobacco use.
Dr. Hoang Nam advises that people at high risk of pancreatic disease, high blood lipids, high blood calcium, hormonal abnormalities, and those using certain medications such as steroids, estrogen, antiviral drugs, and diabetes medications should maintain a healthy lifestyle during Tet to prevent disease and have regular health checkups.
