Aljazeera news agency on April 13 quoted the Qatari Foreign Ministry's announcement that the country and Bahrain agreed to restore diplomatic relations after many years of disagreement.
The decision to restore diplomatic relations was made during a meeting of the Bahrain-Qatar Committee at the headquarters of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on April 12, the source said. Earlier, in January, the Crown Prince of Bahrain had a phone call with the King of Qatar, a move considered to be aimed at mending relations between the two Gulf countries.
In 2017, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt severed diplomatic relations with Qatar, accusing Doha of having close ties with Iran and supporting hardline Islamist groups—charges that Doha has consistently denied. Saudi Arabia , the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt have since restored diplomatic relations with Qatar.
