Pig cafes are all the rage in Japan . The surprisingly chubby, clean and friendly animals have brought smiles to many visitors to Mipig Café in Tokyo.

“It’s great. It’s relaxing and fun,” said Brad Loomis, a software engineer from Washington, who visited the bar with his 21-year-old daughter, Paige.

The American father and son were among dozens of customers who came to the shop on a recent morning, taking selfies and grinning with the adorable piglets.

Mipig Café in the trendy Harajuku district is one of 10 pig cafes that have opened across Japan, including one on the northernmost main island of Hokkaido and another in Fukuoka on the southern island of Kyushu.

The first store opened in Tokyo in 2019. Two more are expected to open later this year.

“Each pig has its own personality. Some are quite stubborn, while others are very gentle,” said Shiho Kitagawa, managing director at Mipig.

The animals at the cafe are a breed of “micropigs.” They are no bigger than corgis, even when fully grown. The cafes also have adorable piglets the size of toy poodles.

A beverage dispenser was placed in the corner of the cafe, but hardly anyone bothered to take a drink because they were too busy with the pigs.

Customers must pay 2,200 yen for the first 30 minutes to have an unforgettable experience with the pigs. Before coming to the restaurant, visitors also need to make a reservation.

Foreign tourists visiting the cafe said they learned about it on social media even though the cafe did not advertise.

Ben Russell, an Australian tourist, smiled as he finally had a pig climb into his lap. Although it was his first time meeting a real pig, it felt very familiar.

The pig cafe is the latest in a string of animal cafes popping up in Japan, including ones featuring owls, hedgehogs, birds and even snakes.
