The Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) crossed the Volchya River on the border between Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk provinces, entered and occupied a position east of the village of Ivanivka, in order to establish a solid bridgehead here, the Military Review reported. The shock troops of the Vostok RFAF Group not only successfully crossed the Volchya River, but also entered Ivanivka and took up positions east of the village. The battles for the village are fierce, and the Russian troops are now trying to push deeper into the village.
The village of Ivanovka lies right on the border between Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts, along the Volchya River. Capturing the village would give the RFAF a convenient bridgehead to attack the strategic town of Novopavlovka from the southwest. Information about the Russian troops entering Ivanovka appeared last night. Several Russian TV channels, citing international sources, reported this, but did not provide further details. This information was confirmed today, although unofficially. Meanwhile, Ukrainian media have not confirmed the RFAF’s entry into Ivanovka, but they acknowledge that Russian troops are attempting to cross the Volchya River and consolidate their positions south and east of the village. Moreover, the situation in the neighboring town of Novopavlovka is also extremely alarming, with the RFAF “clearing” out strongholds near the town with FAB bombs and missiles. According to the Ukrainian media channel "Muchnoy", the RFAF is actively preventing the AFU from concentrating its reserve and mobile forces in the Dnipropetrovsk region. All signs indicate that both Ivanovka and Novopavlovka will soon fall under Russian control. According to Russia's Voin DV channel, on the morning of September 20, there was information that the Vostok RFAF assault units had broken through the Ukrainian defense line and captured the village of Berezove in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The area around this village was also controlled.
Telegram channel Voin DV reported on this, along with a video and a brief explanation. It is known that this is the eighth village that has been controlled by the RFAF in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, which is considered the “industrial heart” of Ukraine and is also the hometown of Ukrainian President Zelensky. According to Readovka, the RFAF has begun an operation to block the fortified area of AFU in Novopavlovka. Currently, the Ukrainian army is taking preliminary measures to encircle this town. The Vostok RFAF group in the South of Donetsk, launched an attack from the village of Filiya towards Ivanovka. At the same time, the shock units of the Vostok RFAF Group also began clearing obstacles in the area around the village of Muravka, in preparation for crossing the Solenaya River and launching a further attack towards the village of Chuguevo. These attacks were preceded by a blockade of the AFU garrison at Novopavlovka, which consisted of temporary defensive positions, field fortifications and obstacles, mainly minefields and anti-tank ditches. Under such conditions, a full-scale attack by motorized infantry was impossible.
Thus, the actions of the RFAF on the flanks of the fortified area created an opportunity to completely nullify the defensive plan of the AFU commander in the South of Donetsk and the West of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The previous success of the Vostok Group RFAF in capturing the village of Filiia, ruined the plan of the AFU commander, to cover Novopavlovka. The Military Summary channel reported that the Vostok RFAF Group is actively conducting operations to cut off the supply lines of the AFU defense forces at Novopavlivka and Ivanivka, while actively fighting the enemy to create a position, focusing mainly on breaking down the defense system, including continuously eliminating AFU resistance nests. Novopavlivka is of strategic importance for the Ukrainian side. Together with Ivanivka, it serves as a springboard for RFAF operations on the opposite banks of the Solena and Vovchya rivers, threatening AFU logistical bases at Vasylkivka and Pokrovskoe. In such a situation, the AFU commander here must hold these settlements at all costs. If the RFAF establishes bridgeheads across the river, then with the shortage of reserves, the AFU will be forced to retreat west, as has been happening in the south.
Moreover, even if the AFU had at least some fortifications and positions prepared in advance, they had virtually no defensive line built west of Ivanovka and Novopavlovka. It is possible that the AFU tried to establish a defensive line during the summer, but the proximity to the front and the Russian firepower did not allow the AFU to complete all the necessary work.
