The British-Vietnamese cave exploration team and the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management Board have just discovered 22 new caves and 3 additional survey caves.
On April 14, Mr. Pham Hong Thai, Director of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, said that from March 1 to 15, 12 members of the expedition surveyed caves in Minh Hoa and Tuyen Hoa districts. The team discovered 22 new caves, 3 additional caves in Va, Doi Trieng 2 and Tien caves with a total length of 3,550 m.
In the core area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, there are 7 new caves with a total length of 1,415 m; the buffer zone has 7 new caves with a length of 1,027 m. The adjacent area of Lam Hoa commune, Tuyen Hoa district has 11 caves with a total length of 1,108 m.
The caves are 30 to 572 m long, of which the four longest caves are Va 516 m, 12/2 Dry cave 404 m long in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. Vuc Hung cave is 430 m long and is located in Thuong Trach commune, in the buffer zone of the national park. Ong Dau cave is 572 m long and is located in Lam Hoa commune, Tuyen Hoa district. The height of the cave entrance ranges from 46-550 m, the depth from 32-154 m.

"The caves are only in the scope of research to access, determine location, and make preliminary descriptions. In the near future, the unit will survey and exploit any cave areas that can welcome tourists . The most important thing is to preserve and keep intact these new caves," said Mr. Thai.
Due to its seamless limestone mountains with few faults, Quang Binh is known as the "Kingdom of Caves" with more than 500 caves discovered, concentrated in Bo Trach and Tuyen Hoa districts. About 40 caves have been put into tourism exploitation, including Son Doong, En and Pigmy, the first, second and fourth largest caves in the world, respectively.
