Wonsan-Kalma is one of the key tourism projects that has been a top priority for North Korea in recent years. The construction of this project is seen as a move to open up more to the world .
Known as one of the North Korean leader's childhood summer vacation spots, Wonsan-Kalma impresses with its clear blue water and white sand beaches.
The resort complex under construction in Wonsan-Kalma covers a total area of up to 245 hectares, with hundreds of buildings and thousands of hotel rooms.
Wonsan-Kalma is also located near a new airport on the east coast, making it very convenient for travel and attracting foreign tourists.
KCNA said the site would become "a seaside wonderland, the largest and finest resort in North Korea".
During his recent visit, the North Korean leader also stressed the importance of recreational activities at the new resort. Special attention was also paid to the waste management system aimed at "green tourism".
North Korea is planning to restore tourism activities at Mount Kumgang, Mount Chilbo, Majon, Kumya, Riwon and Yombunjin.
Although the timing of the reopening to foreign tourists has not been announced, many believe that the return of foreign tourists, especially from China, will bring significant revenue to North Korea.
Before the pandemic, Chinese tourists accounted for 90% of international tourists visiting North Korea.
