All 300 lawmakers participated in the impeachment vote, with 204 votes in favor, 85 votes against, 3 abstentions and 8 invalid votes.
The impeachment resolution passed stated the reason for impeachment was "violation of the Constitution and the law when declaring a state of emergency martial law".
Upon receiving the impeachment decision, President Yoon will be suspended from office and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will assume the presidency. According to the Constitution, the Constitutional Court must issue a ruling within 180 days. If the court accepts the impeachment decision, Yoon will be removed from office and a presidential election will be held within 60 days.Since democratization in 1987, three of the eight elected presidents have been impeached by the National Assembly during their terms. Of the five elected presidents in the past 20 years, only former President Lee Myung-bak and former President Moon Jae-in have avoided impeachment.
