All 300 lawmakers participated in the impeachment vote, with 204 votes in favor, 85 votes against, 3 abstentions, and 8 invalid votes.

The impeachment resolution passed stated the reason for impeachment as "violation of the Constitution and the law when declaring a state of emergency martial law".

Upon receiving the impeachment decision, President Yoon will be suspended from office and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will take over as president. According to the Constitution, the Constitutional Court must issue a ruling within 180 days. If the court accepts the impeachment decision, Mr. Yoon will be removed from office and a presidential election will be held within 60 days.

Since democratization in 1987, of the eight presidents elected, three have been impeached by the National Assembly during their terms. Of the five presidents elected by the people in the past 20 years, only former President Lee Myung-bak and former President Moon Jae-in have avoided impeachment.
