In his opening speech, Vice President of the Hanoi Elderly Association Pham Huy Giap said: In recent years, the implementation of a civilized and progressive funeral lifestyle has been led, directed and implemented by Party committees and authorities at all levels, bringing about practical results. However, the cremation rate in a locality has not yet reached the set target.

As of December 31, 2024, the average cremation rate in the city is 82%. While some (old) districts have a cremation rate of nearly 100%, in 18 (old) districts and towns, the rate is 78.3%; some districts do not meet the target set by Program No. 08-CTr/TU of the Hanoi Party Committee. In particular, some districts have a low cremation rate, reaching only 51.4% of deaths.
Implementing the direction of the City People's Committee, the Hanoi Association of the Elderly has presided over and coordinated with the Department of Culture - Sports and related departments and branches to develop Topic No. 01/CD-HNCTHN on "Promoting the role of the elderly in implementing a civilized and progressive funeral lifestyle in Hanoi", aiming to replicate models of organizing civilized, economical and progressive funerals; avoiding formalities, ostentation and waste.
"Civilized funeral is an inevitable trend, shaping cultural beauty in each family and the whole community, in which the role and responsibility of the elderly is very important - Mr. Pham Huy Giap shared.

At the conference, delegates discussed and assessed the current situation of funeral organization in the locality, the positive points, shortcomings, and limitations; analyzed the role and responsibility of the elderly in performing civilized funerals; shared effective models and methods; recommended the development of conventions and village regulations associated with the implementation of civilized and progressive funeral contents...
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, Chairwoman of the Elderly Association of Phung Chau Commune (old) said that from 2019 to now, the area has had 301 people pass away, 219 families have performed cremation. In 2025, families will cremate their deceased loved ones before bringing them home to hold the funeral. This is a new practice, but it has received the people's approval and support.
Mr. To Anh Luat (Association of the Elderly of Chuong My Ward) proposed that authorities at all levels have policies and plans to invest in renovating existing people's cemeteries and planning and building new cemeteries by area or "apartments" for the deceased, contributing to building a civilized and modern capital while still preserving the traditions of the nation and locality...

Receiving comments, Chairman of the Hanoi Elderly Association Nguyen The Toan highly appreciated the presentations of the elderly in Chuong My ward at the seminar. All comments were in high agreement with the topic of the Hanoi Elderly Association; promoting the core role of the elderly, creating many good and practical models, creating positive changes to implement a civilized lifestyle in funerals in the locality.
Mr. Nguyen The Toan suggested that the Elderly Association of Chuong My Ward continue to promote the exemplary role of the elderly cadres and members; encourage children and grandchildren to organize simple and economical funerals, comply with conventions and village regulations; and gradually create a widespread practice throughout the city.
