Both traditional and trendy
“Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu” is a pure Vietnamese 3D animated film developed from the animated series “Trang Quynh thoi nhi nho” which is popular on YouTube platform with more than 1.42 million followers, and more than 1.6 billion views. The work was created by Meritorious Artist Trinh Lam Tung and the Alpha Animation Studio team.
The film tells the story of the incident that occurred when Trang Quynh's father was falsely accused of stealing precious jade. While fleeing with his friends from the police and trying to clear his family's name, the boy Quynh accidentally discovered the plot of a dark force related to the legendary Nine-Tailed Fox.
Speaking about choosing the character of Trang Quynh the child in his first 3D animated film, Meritorious Artist Trinh Lam Tung said: “Trang Quynh is a very typical character in the treasure trove of Vietnamese folklore with familiar, close anecdotes associated with many generations of Vietnamese childhood. The film is not only a connection between today's children and the cultural heritage of the past, but also an opportunity for filmmakers to retell those stories with the breath of the times, using new cinematic language and film production technology.”
At the same time to welcome the summer of 2025, the 3D animated film "Cricket: Adventure to the Swamp" inspired by the classic children's literature work by writer To Hoai, produced by Cineplus, was also released to the audience. The film tells the story of the adventure of two brothers, Cricket Men and Cricket Trui, in the dangerous Swamp. The film crew adapted some details to make the film closer to modern audiences. The countryside setting in the original story was transformed into Hanoi city, with famous locations such as Lenin Park, Hanoi Flag Tower, Long Bien Bridge, etc.
In addition to the characters in the original, the film also has some new characters such as Rau Que, Ladybug Baby... The action scenes have the colors of superhero movies. Both films tell familiar stories with modern forms, eye-catching 3D effects, conveying messages that are contemporary and close to today's audiences. In particular, both have the participation of many famous artists and singers as consultants and voice actors, such as People's Artist Quang Tho, Meritorious Artist Chieu Xuan...
Opening up a promising digital film studio
The demand for animated films in Vietnam is quite large, especially among children. In domestic cinemas, on average, for every 10 films released, there are about 2 animated films. Revenue from animated films accounts for 12-15% of total revenue from theatrical films. However, animated films shown in Vietnam are mainly imported.
“Wolfoo and the Mysterious Island” released in 2023 is the first Vietnamese animated film to be commercially released, earning VND5 billion in revenue. Therefore, the two purely Vietnamese 3D animated films “Trang Quynh nhi: The Legend of Kim Nguu” and “De Men: The Adventure to Xom Lay Loi” released in theaters this time are a big step forward for Vietnamese animated cinema, meeting the expectations of both audiences and the industry.
As the mother of two children, Ms. Nguyen Minh Thu (Cau Giay District) expressed: “I am very excited to wait for the two Vietnamese animated films to be released in theaters. Previously, my children also liked the movie “Wolfoo and the Mysterious Island” because of its beautiful effects, impressive scenes and good “trendy” dialogue, not inferior to foreign films”.
After more than 20 years of pursuing his passion for animation, Meritorious Artist Trinh Lam Tung said that although the series “Trang Quynh in his silly days” shown on digital platforms is very popular, producing a 3D movie for theatrical release is extremely difficult. The crew spent more than a year making it. According to director Trinh Lam Tung, the level of human resources in the field of cinematography and animation in Vietnam can compete with the world , but equipment and technology for making films require large investments, especially 3D animation.
Mr. Vu Duy Nam, representative of Cineplus, said that the 3D animation film “De Men: Adventure to the Swamp” is the first product of Vietnam Digital Film Studio, made with the cooperation between the University of Information Technology and Communications (Thai Nguyen University) and Cineplus, aiming to create breakthroughs in exploiting technology and culture. Currently, the project has built a regular workforce of about 50-60 lecturers and students directly participating in the production stages, especially in technical areas such as 3D modeling and visual effects.
The launch of two 3D animated films and the construction of the Vietnam Digital Film Studio show a new step forward for domestic animated cinema, while opening up promising opportunities for this market in the near future.
