Over the past 4 years, many dragon fruit growers have been struggling with the price of dragon fruit fluctuating every day, but about 10 farming households in Ruong Moi hamlet, village 5, Ham Duc commune, Ham Thuan Bac district (Binh Thuan province) were very excited when they decided to destroy dragon fruit and switch to growing green vegetables such as coriander in greenhouses with a stable income of about 140 million VND/year/sao of fertile land.

Farmers in Ruong Moi hamlet, village 5, Ham Duc commune, Ham Thuan Bac district came to the profession of growing coriander by chance.

In 2021, the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, dragon fruit output was blocked, and gardeners faced many difficulties. To stabilize their lives, some households here boldly destroyed dragon fruit and switched to growing coriander. Because this crop has many advantages suitable for household economic development conditions, solving the problem of taking care of family life.

Coriander has a short growing period, only 3 months after planting it can be harvested; then 45 days later it can be harvested again. The initial investment cost for production is also low. A package of coriander seeds is only about 150,000 VND; 1 sao (1,000 m2) of land only needs to sow 3 - 5 packages of seeds.

Care work mainly uses family labor such as: pruning and selecting young plants, not letting vegetables grow too densely and replanting sparsely grown areas, fertilizing, weeding...

The coriander garden in Hamlet 5, Ham Duc Commune, Ham Thuan Bac District (Binh Thuan Province) is grown on land that was previously a dragon fruit garden. Growing this spice vegetable, farmers here earn 140 million VND/sao/year.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao, Ruong Moi hamlet, village 5, Ham Duc commune, has nearly 4 years of experience growing traditional coriander outdoors. She shared that thanks to converting 6 sao of dragon fruit to coriander, her family has the conditions to raise 3 children to study properly.

On an area of 6 sao, Ms. Thao produces coriander in a rotational and rolling manner to ensure continuous daily supply for private consumption with a vegetable harvest of about 1 - 1.2 quintals/day. For nearly 4 years, the price of coriander has always been stable at about 20,000 VND/kg; minus the cost of 3 hours of care and the cost of investing in fertilizers and pesticides, Ms. Thao earns a stable income of 2 million VND/day.

"Currently, the eldest child has graduated from university and has a stable job, the second child is in his final year of university and the youngest child is in grade 12, family life has also improved" - Ms. Thao shared more.

Sharing the same neighborhood with Ms. Thao, Mr. Tran Thanh Truc shared: His family specializes in growing coriander on an area of more than 3 sao; taking advantage of concrete pillars to grow dragon fruit, he invested in buying nets to cover all 3 sao of land; the cost of the net is about 17 million VND/1 sao, the usage time is about 2 and a half years.

Although the initial cost of growing coriander in a greenhouse is higher than growing vegetables traditionally outdoors, the number of harvests as well as the yield per sao is 2-3 times higher than that of coriander grown outdoors.

Each harvest of 1 sao of coriander yields over 10 quintals, earning over 20 million VND. On average, each sao of vegetables grown in a greenhouse yields about 7 harvests per year, earning about 140 million VND - Mr. Truc added.

Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet Nhung - Head of the Women's Association of Village 5, Ham Duc Commune, Ham Thuan Bac District (Binh Thuan Province) shared: Before 2021, in Ruong Moi Hamlet, Village 5, Ham Duc Commune, there was only one household, Ms. Le Thi Cai (people often call her Aunt Sau) who specializes in growing coriander.

The Women's Union of the village encouraged Aunt Sau to share the profession of growing coriander with the women. Since then, the village has had about 10 households growing this vegetable; each household grows an area of 2-6 sao, bringing quite high economic efficiency. Therefore, in the coming time, the Women's Union of Village 5, Ham Duc will encourage women to establish a group "specializing in growing coriander".

According to households specializing in growing coriander in Ruong Moi hamlet, village 5, Ham Duc commune, Ham Thuan Bac district (Binh Thuan province), the output for coriander is not as much as other green vegetables. This aromatic vegetable is only consumed in pho restaurants, provided by a number of traders with a stable amount of vegetables every day, the quantity increases and decreases not much.

This is an important factor, farmers need to consider, connect, and find stable output before deciding to grow coriander. Therefore, the Women's Union of Village 5, Ham Duc Commune, mobilized to establish a "Specialized coriander cultivation" group with the purpose of helping them to get closer together, learn, and share experiences in vegetable production to achieve both yield and ensure food safety and hygiene, bringing coriander products of Ruong Moi Hamlet, Village 5, Ham Duc Commune, Ham Thuan Bac District further and further.
