Many of the Japanese players on the list above attended the 2022 World Cup, helping the Japanese team defeat Germany and Spain to reach the round of 16, before being stopped on penalties in the cruel match against Croatia.

The Japanese team is very successful at the Asian Cup, with 4 championships in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2011, a runner-up in 2019, a fourth-place finish in 2007 and 2 quarter-final exits in 1996 and 2015.

Evaluating the strength of Vietnam's opponents in the 2023 Asian Cup finals

At the 2023 Asian Cup, Japan is in the same group as Vietnam, Indonesia and Iraq. Coach Hajime Moriyasu and his team are considered the strongest in the group, with outstanding experience in international tournaments, and many players reaching their peak.

The Japanese team will compete against the Vietnamese team on January 14 in the opening match, then meet Iraq and Indonesia respectively.

Japan is in extremely good form with a series of 9 consecutive victories, including crushing Germany (4-1), El Salvador (6-0), Canada (4-1), Syria (5-0), Myanmar (5-0) and most recently a 5-0 victory over Thailand in a friendly match.

In the last 4 matches against the Vietnamese team, Japan won 3 matches (all with a score of 1-0), and drew 1 match. At the 2019 Asian Cup, Japan won 1-0 against Vietnam thanks to the only goal scored by Ritsu Doan from the penalty spot. However, the Japanese player will no longer have the chance to face goalkeeper Dang Van Lam at the 2023 Asian Cup because the goalkeeper of the Vietnamese team was injured and had to stay home.
