A team of four students, Aaron Ho Yat Fung, Isaac Zachary To, Justin Wang Tou Duong and Ngo Hei Leung, at Diocesan Boys' School in Hong Kong, created the smallest humanoid robot ever recorded, IFL Science reported on February 16. At just 14.1 cm tall, the robot is 11.3 mm shorter than the previous world record holder, created by Zain Ahmad Qureshi of Pakistan in 2022.

The new record has been confirmed by Guinness World Records (GWR). To meet the record requirements, the robot must be able to walk on two legs and rotate its shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.

After designing the robot using software provided by the school’s robotics lab, the students built the body out of acrylic and 3D-printed parts. Servo motors from a custom factory were then installed, allowing the robot to move its arms and legs. The tiny humanoid is powered by a built-in 7.4-volt lithium-ion battery and can be controlled remotely using an app or buttons on a control panel on the robot’s back.

The students say the little robot can walk, play soccer, dance, and even practice martial arts. In addition to making it into the record books, the team’s motivation for building the robot was to create a low-cost learning tool for use in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education .

By designing the robot as small as possible, the cost of mass production can be reduced, making it cheaper and more accessible to families in need. "The team plans to make the design and programming code public to continue working towards the goal of promoting STEAM education," Isaac said.
