"Washing the durian orchard" for the new season.

The durian harvest season in the communes of Lam Dong province ended two months ago. Even in areas with the latest durian harvest, such as La Day, Da Tro, Da Mi (La Da commune) and Bao Lam communes, it ended more than a month ago. After the harvest, durian farmers usually "get straight to work" on "cleaning the orchard"—a term used by durian growers, meaning tidying up the orchard, pruning branches, and cleaning the garden.

Most durian growers make a profit.

Currently, orchards are being fertilized and sprayed with pesticides to protect durian trees from pests and diseases, and to provide nutrients for the trees to recover their "health," preparing them for the new growth and flowering cycle of the new season.

Mr. Nguyen Nam from Bao Lam 3 commune said: "The 2025 durian harvest didn't meet many people's expectations, but most durian growers still made a profit." In La Da, specifically in Hamlet 4, many durian orchards harvested early in June and finished the season at the end of July. At this time, the price of durian fluctuated from 60,000 to 80,000 VND/kg, depending on the variety, so durian growers made high profits. However, even though they are in the same La Da commune, the hamlets of La Day and Da Tro harvested a month later, from July to the end of September, so they only had a good harvest in the first batch. In the second batch, the price of durian dropped to 37,000 - 50,000 VND/kg. In some places, prolonged rain during the ripening period caused the durian to become tough, so traders only bought it at 15,000 - 17,000 VND/kg. However, since the first harvest usually yields over 50% of the orchard's output, most durian farmers made a profit in the 2025 harvest season. After the season, Mr. Nam hired more workers to prepare for the "orchard cleanup"...

Mr. Tran Cong Hoi, from Hamlet 10, Nam Thanh Commune, who has over 20 years of experience in durian farming and was recognized as an outstanding farmer at the provincial level in 2020, currently has 6 hectares of durian trees in production, earning over 3 billion VND in profit annually. He said: “After harvesting, farmers prepare the orchard. Durian care usually has three stages: the first stage is 'cleaning the orchard,' the second stage is supplementing nutrients to encourage new shoots. When the durian trees are preparing to flower, farmers must spray various supportive chemicals to encourage the trees to produce many flower buds. At this time, the weather is very important; if there is too much rain, the trees will not flower or will flower late, or will flower less, resulting in low yields. The third stage is when the durian trees bear fruit; caring for the fruit is the most difficult stage. Besides fertilizers and pesticides, a mix of sunny and rainy days is best. If it is too sunny, watering is necessary, however, the yield will not be as high as with natural weather conditions. "Unusual weather conditions make care more difficult. Regarding fertilization and pesticide application, most people do it themselves, without a fixed procedure. Durian cultivation is mainly based on experience. The weather changes differently each year, so the care methods also vary." According to Mr. Hoi's experience, caring for durian trees requires considering the weather and making predictions: proactively understanding the weather to encourage new shoots; and providing proper nutrition will result in high-quality flowers and fruit.

According to our investigation, most durian growers are now focusing on producing "clean" produce, registering for regional codes or following VietGAP procedures to facilitate supply to the market and export businesses. Therefore, farmers use branded domestic fertilizers. Areas with regional codes for export to other countries often use organic fertilizers such as fish and chicken manure, and aquatic fertilizers mainly imported from Japan, the US, Australia, Poland, Turkey, the Netherlands, and Germany. The fertilizers and pesticides recommended by suppliers come with quality guarantees to farmers, leading to considerable trust among durian growers.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province currently has 42,622 hectares of durian, with many areas such as La Dạ and Nam Thành having large-scale, concentrated cultivation areas. These areas have registered planting codes and follow VietGAP procedures, resulting in good income. In the past two months, the weather has been erratic, with continuous heavy rains causing many durian orchards to be damaged, with trees falling over and sap leaking from the trunks. Therefore, many farmers have had to spend extra time scraping the bark to treat the disease by applying pesticides to prevent it from spreading widely.
