What's special about the opening ceremony of ASIAD 19?

The opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games will take place at 7 p.m. today, September 23, at the Olympic Stadium in Hangzhou, China. The theme of the 19th Asian Games opening ceremony is "Towards Asia" with the aim of conveying the cultural colors of the countries and territories participating in this congress.

The entire opening ceremony lasted about 2 hours with traditional rituals such as welcoming, parade, opening speech and lighting the torch. The most anticipated highlight was the art performance of the opening ceremony. Host China is expected to create a high-class performance, pleasing the audience like they did at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Mr. Sha Xiaolan - who was part of the director team for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics - is the general director of the opening event of the 19th ASIAD.

According to director Sha, the special thing about the opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games is that there are no fireworks, even though this is considered one of the unique cultural features of China. The purpose of not setting off fireworks is to convey the message of environmental protection.

However, the opening ceremony did not lack color and highlights. It is expected to be a party of the future based on digital technology .

During the opening ceremony, the organizers will introduce the long-standing history and culture of Hangzhou city and Zhejiang province through vivid images based on 3D technology without the need for glasses.

The highlight of the program is millions of virtual sparks lighting up the sky. Each spark represents an online torchbearer. Finally, these sparks will merge into a human figure walking down the stage and lighting the 19th ASIAD cauldron with a real-life torchbearer. With the goal of protecting the environment, the fuel for lighting the torch is zero-emission methanol.

China has previously launched an online torchlighting program. The event attracted more than 100 million participants, of all ages. The technical team used AI and other technologies to record movements, simulating each person with every detailed movement.

Mr. Sha Xiaolan said that this is the first sporting event in the world to light the flame in such a way. This reflects the message of sports, which is to attract everyone, transcending the limits of space and time, regardless of nationality or race. He hopes that this image will help build a global community for a bright future.

The opening ceremony will feature many famous Asian artists such as Jannine Weigel (Thailand), Hiroaki Kato (Japan) and Talia Lahoud (Lebanon).
