A woman surnamed Wang is gaining attention on Chinese social media for her unusual lawsuit. She accused a cosmetic surgery clinic of botching her eyelid surgery, causing complications, but was instead sued in return.
Earlier in June 2020, Ms. Wang went to Meixi Beauty Clinic in Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China, to undergo double eyelid surgery at a cost of $1,800 (approximately over 47 million VND).
A woman surnamed Meng, who claimed to be the marketing director of the facility, personally performed the surgery on Wang. After the operation was completed, Wang experienced intense pain in his eye area, his eyelids were turned inside out, and tears flowed incessantly.
She was immediately taken to a major hospital for emergency treatment. "I called Ms. Mạnh, and she said the symptoms would go away in a few days. After that, she always refused my calls. Doctors at the major hospital discovered that the person who performed the procedure had removed the tear duct and used incorrect technique on the eyelid. They advised me to have further surgery to correct this error," Vương said.
The woman was constantly in tears due to the after-effects of a botched surgery.
In 2022, the local forensic examination agency determined that Wang's eye injury was equivalent to a level 9 disability (in China, the most severe level of disability is level 10).
The city's health authorities also discovered that Ms. Meng did not have a medical license, while the Meixi beauty salon was operating without a license. The facility was closed down a few months after Wang's surgery.
"This surgery left me with severe aftereffects. I felt ashamed and didn't dare go to work or meet anyone. Since then, I've suffered from depression and chronic insomnia," Wang shared. She decided to file a lawsuit against Ms. Meng and the beauty clinic.
Before the court delivered its verdict, Ms. Meng sent a lawyer to negotiate with Wang, offering financial compensation in exchange for leniency, hoping to help her avoid imprisonment.
The two sides subsequently reached an agreement: Wang would receive $125,000 (approximately 3.2 billion VND) in compensation, in exchange for deleting all posts about the surgery and pledging never to file a complaint with authorities or report it to the media.
According to the agreement, if Wang breaks her promise, she will have to return $59,000 (approximately 1.6 billion VND) to Ms. Meng.
Although Wang had received the full amount, she soon discovered that Ms. Meng had posted videos on social media to insult her and falsely accuse her brother of being a fraud.
Wang's sister-in-law retaliated online by sharing documents proving that Ms. Meng was practicing medicine illegally. Wang herself also appeared in several videos to recount her own story and expose Ms. Meng's wrongdoing.
This move prompted Ms. Meng to file a countersuit against Wang for violating the confidentiality agreement between the two parties.
Earlier this year, the court issued a final ruling in favor of Ms. Meng, ordering Wang to repay the money as per the terms of the agreement.
Dissatisfied with the outcome, Wang appealed to a higher-level prosecution agency to request a review of the case, but this request was rejected on May 23.
Wang shared on social media: "The journey to protect my rights has been incredibly difficult. Let my story be a painful lesson for all women. Think carefully and thoroughly before deciding on cosmetic surgery, because it could become a source of lifelong regret."
