DNVN - According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration ( Ministry of Transport ), the volume of goods passing through seaports in the first two months of the year grew strongly, with the volume of goods estimated at 111.614 million tons, an increase of 8% over the same period in 2023.

Vietnam Maritime Administration said that the volume of goods passing through seaports in the first two months of 2024 increased compared to the same period last year. The volume of goods passing through seaports is estimated at 111.614 million tons, up 8% over the same period in 2023.

Goods with growth trends include exports (estimated at 28.684 million tons, up 8%), imports estimated at 33.884 million tons (up 16%), domestic goods estimated at 48.593 million tons (up 4%) and transit goods unloaded at an estimated 454 thousand tons.

For containerized goods, the volume of goods passing through the seaport in Teus (equivalent to 1 20-foot container) in the first two months of the year is estimated at 4.054 million Teus, up 27% over the same period. Of which, exports are estimated at 1.323 million Teus (up 20%), imports are estimated at 1.252 million Teus (up 19%) and domestic goods are estimated at 1.478 million Teus (up 40%).

In the first two months of the year, the volume of goods transported through seaports is estimated to increase by 8% over the same period in 2023.

Notably, January - the first month of 2024 - witnessed a strong growth in the volume of goods passing through seaports. The reason is that January this year is the month before Tet - the time when cargo volume is usually the highest in the year because of preparation for Tet. Cargo volume in the first month of 2024 reached 68.716 million tons (excluding transit goods not handled at the port), an increase of 43% over the same period in 2023. Cargo output in Teus reached 2.4 million Teus, an increase of 52%.

Along with the increase in cargo volume, the volume of container cargo through the port in January also increased by 51% compared to the same period in 2023. In particular, Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, and Hai Phong all had growth rates of 43-53% over the same period. Quang Ninh increased by 34.2%, some other areas had increased output such as Hue increased by 200%, Thanh Hoa increased by 64.8%, Dong Thap and Nghe An increased by 58%, Quang Ngai increased by 62%, Dong Nai increased by 32%.

The areas of Nha Trang, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam , and Can Tho all increased by over 10%. Only the areas of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, and An Giang recorded a low decrease.

However, according to data updated to early February by the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department, the amount of goods remaining at seaports and airport warehouses has also increased sharply. Specifically, in the first month of this year alone, the amount of containers remaining at the Saigon Port Customs Branch, Region 1, increased by nearly 50% compared to the last month of the year, from 825 containers to 1,227 containers.

Similarly, at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport Customs Branch, the number of goods backlogged for more than 30 days and 60 days in December 2023 was 123 lines of goods, with over 32.6 tons. In the first month of this year, the number of backlogged goods increased to 134 lines of goods, with over 67.6 tons, more than double that of December.

A representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department said that over the past years, the unit has been very active in handling backlogged goods. However, this is not only the responsibility of the customs agency but also involves many other units, the processing, auctioning... process must go through many stages.

To effectively handle backlogs, there needs to be coordination among shipping lines. This includes regulations on the storage and appraisal of goods, determining the value of goods for auction of goods held by carriers at Vietnamese seaports.
