In accordance with Directive No. 21/CT-BCT dated December 10, 2025, of the Ministry of Industry and Trade on ensuring electricity supply during holidays, Tet (Lunar New Year), and important political and cultural events in 2026, the National Power Supply Steering Committee requests all units and branches to focus intensely, uphold a sense of responsibility, and maintain a stable electricity supply to serve political and cultural activities and the daily needs of people nationwide.

According to the National Center for Hydrometeorology, the weather during the 2026 New Year's holiday will vary significantly between regions. Northern Vietnam and North Central Vietnam will be affected by a strengthening cold front, with the possibility of severe cold from January 2nd, and some mountainous areas experiencing extreme cold accompanied by light rain. Central Vietnam will have showers, with localized heavy rain and a drop in temperature, while the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam will maintain sunny days with scattered showers in the evening, and maximum temperatures in Southern Vietnam exceeding 32°C in some areas.

At the same time, nationwide electricity consumption during the holiday is forecast to decrease significantly, with average daily load only about 80% compared to a normal working day, and will increase rapidly again immediately after the holiday ends.

NSMO noted that the sharp drop in load combined with severe cold weather in the North and rain in the Central region poses many challenges for the dispatch and operation of the power system. These include the risk of voltage surges on the grid, reduced system inertia, the need to reduce output of some types of power sources, ensuring downstream water supply for hydropower plants, maintaining appropriate coal-fired power plant configurations, and rationally mobilizing gas turbines to ensure the technical safety of gas fields.

Recognizing that ensuring electricity supply during the 2026 New Year holiday is a crucial political task, NSMO has proactively developed detailed operating procedures, fully prepared technical infrastructure and personnel, and reinforced the force of engineers and commanding officers at both the main and backup control centers. Control room switching and incident response drills have also been conducted to ensure safe and reliable system operation in all situations.

In its daily operations, NSMO calculates methods to ensure system safety, prevent overloading, avoid excess capacity during off-peak hours, and ensure sufficient capacity during peak hours; balance supply and demand between regions; operate coal-fired power plants stably; rationally exploit renewable energy sources; and operate hydropower plants flexibly in line with downstream water supply requirements and water storage for the 2026 dry season.

In addition, NSMO has closely coordinated with Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), power generation units, power corporations, and the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) to prepare plans to ensure electricity supply with the highest level of readiness, strictly complying with dispatch orders and current regulations.

With thorough preparation and coordinated efforts, NSMO affirms its readiness to ensure a safe, stable, and continuous electricity supply during the 2026 New Year holiday.
