The child was admitted to Baray Santuk Hospital earlier this week, suspected of having dengue fever. Test results on September 21 showed the patient was positive for Zika virus.
The announcement from the Cambodian Ministry of Health stated that Zika is a flavi virus, mainly transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes but also transmitted sexually, through blood and from mother to child.
Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, rash, red eyes and joint pain.
Most patients recover within 2-7 days and the mortality rate is very low. However, in pregnant women, the infection can lead to stillbirth.
The Cambodian Ministry of Health calls on people, especially pregnant women, to be vigilant and avoid being bitten by Aedes mosquitoes and to see a doctor immediately if they show signs of illness.
