Sorrowful Woman Huong Giang Tea Room

On the afternoon of July 12, female singer Huong Giang met with the media to introduce the live show "Half", taking place on July 28 at VOH Music One theater with the participation of two guest singers Trong Bac and Duy Hung.

Although she has had her own concerts many times, this is a concert with special meaning, marking 25 years of artistic activities, since Huong Giang won the Television Singing Award.

It took her and musician Vu Minh Duc a long time to divide it into three distinct parts, corresponding to three very different periods in their careers:

The first period was when she had just emerged from the Ho Chi Minh City Television Singing Contest in 1997, her working environment was limited to dance halls and foreign language songs.

In the second period, Huong Giang returned to the tea rooms after having her first baby and no longer sang foreign music. Instead, she focused on Vietnamese love songs and became more widely known.

This is also the part that includes songs that the audience likes her to sing, and she also really likes to sing those songs.

The last part of the show, Huong Giang wants to dedicate to herself, to the songs she likes but hasn't had the chance to perform: "For example, there are songs that the audience is too familiar with male voices and think if performed by a female voice it would be very strange. In the upcoming live show, Huong Giang will challenge herself with new things."

A voice known as sad woman

For Huong Giang, performing the live show "Half" is a happiness. And even happier when in the process of realizing this wish, she has received a lot of attention and support, both material and spiritual, from friends, those who loved her from the early days of singing until now.

In response to all those feelings, the ticket price of the live show is equivalent to the ticket price at the tea room: "Huong Giang thinks that her audience is people who are too familiar with tea rooms. Now that the economy is difficult, having to pay a larger amount of money to go to the theater will be a barrier for them. Therefore, with that price, Huong Giang hopes that the auditorium will be filled, filled with love from the audience and from there Huong Giang can burn herself out in music".

Before the 25th anniversary live show, looking back on the past, she half-joked, half-seriously said: "Huong Giang once told the profession's founder: Besides singing and song processing skills, you didn't give me anything else!".

Regarding appearance, she admits that she is very limited: "Even a close friend sometimes compliments Huong Giang on how handsome she is."

Economically, she was born into a retired family, no one in the arts, so she had no ability to invest in herself.

Leaving the 1997 Ho Chi Minh City Television Singing Contest and receiving an offer of guidance to become a music star from musician Nguyen Nam, she refused with a simple thought: Go to school, graduate, then go to work.

I used to think I didn't understand why I won the TV Singing Contest because my singing was so terrible, but now, after the experiences, I sing much better.

She considers herself not famous, just like many singers who sing well but are not famous.

However, choosing a quieter path is also fortunate because up until now she has never had to ask anyone to sing. People often say that being an artist is very hard, but she finds more joy and until now she still makes a good living with her profession, loved by many people.

Maybe she feels at peace because she is a positive person who likes to laugh. She puts aside the tiredness and sadness of life to continue with optimism. When singing, the sadness of life and of herself is poured into every note and melody of the song.

She said she was ugly, had no money, and was lucky to still be able to sing until now.

During the introduction of the live show "Half", singer Huong Giang spoke for the first time about her losses. She said she chose to face them, gradually get used to them and not stir up more pain.

When her husband passed away, she also avoided reading condolences and did not choose to confide her feelings in public. More than anyone, she knew that during the pandemic, the loss of her family was not the most terrible thing. In 2021, she lost her husband, in 2022, she lost her sister, in 2023, she lost her mother. Huong Giang will put those sorrows into songs in the live show, including a song about her mother by musician Vu Minh Duc.

Singer Huong Giang (wife of the late singer Phi Hai) is affectionately called "The Sorrowful Lady of Tea Rooms" by her fans because she appears in all the tea rooms in Ho Chi Minh City.

She was born in 1974 and started singing at the age of 22. She won first prize in Dong Nai Province Television Singing Contest, followed by third prize in Ho Chi Minh City Television Singing Contest in 1997.

She then entered the final round of the National Television Singing Contest and won fourth place (tied with Ho Quynh Huong). With her earthy and metallic voice, Huong Giang is always the first choice of many tea rooms and music venues in Ho Chi Minh City.
