In mid-March, durian, considered "the best in the world " (the unpeeled type), grown in Vietnam, cost 700,000 VND per kilogram, but now it's only 300,000 VND.
On the Musang King durian trading forum, shop owners compete to sell this fruit at prices advertised as "unprecedentedly cheap": 200,000-300,000 VND per kilogram (whole fruit), and durian pulp costs 700,000-750,000 VND.
At a fruit shop on Hai Ba Trung Street, District 1 (HCMC), each 300 gram tray of durian is sold for 200,000 VND, and customers can buy 1 kg for only 600,000 VND.
"The price of this type of durian has dropped sharply in the past 3 days, so I sell 2-3 quintals each time. Compared to March, the amount of durian imported has increased 4 times," said an employee at this store.
In her 5 years of selling durian, Ms. Loan, owner of an online fruit store in District 8, has never seen this type of fruit as cheap as this year. Each kilogram of shelled durian costs only 600,000-650,000 VND, half the price compared to early March and 40% lower than imported goods.
Two years ago, Musang King had to order for a whole week to have it to sell. This year, when the crop is at its peak, the supply in the Western provinces is abundant. She said, "We have orders every day."

VnExpress records show that the selling price of Musang King at the garden fluctuates between 130,000-150,000 VND per kg.
Ms. Oanh, owner of Musang King garden in Can Tho, said she just sold 1 ton for 150,000 VND. This price has decreased by 40% compared to the cut in April, but according to Ms. Oanh, it is still a high profit.
According to Mr. Dang Manh Khuong, a durian dealer in Can Tho, compared to mid-March, durian prices have decreased by about 50-70%, depending on the type, mainly due to abundant supply.
Durian varieties in the West are in full harvest, including Musang King. In addition, China has reduced its purchases, causing a flood of goods to the markets, pushing the price of all types of durian to a low level, making it difficult for Musang King to compete. Currently, Musang King is only equal to the price of grade A organic Ri6 durian sold on the market.
Musang King originated from Malaysia, has been tested by people in the Central Highlands and Mekong Delta and has been bearing fruit for three years now. They are being sold in many fruit stores in Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, and Hanoi . Compared to previous years, this year Musang King output has increased 3-5 times.
This fruit is oval, not too big, weighing 2-4 kg. The skin is dark green and has very large thorns. This variety is characterized by a groove between the stem and the body of the fruit. The bottom of the fruit clearly shows 5 large and thick segments.
