Indonesia has plans to conduct further research on the plant variety and expand the cultivated area.

Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, and also its coordinator for cooperation with China, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, recently stated that the potential value of durian exports to China could reach $8 billion.

According to a report by the Indonesian Ministry of Trade, in 2022, Indonesia exported durian to China worth up to US$4.5 billion, and in 2023, the value increased to US$6.7 billion. Meanwhile, in the Chinese market, demand for imported fruits, especially durian, is increasing, but Indonesia's market share in this product is not commensurate with that demand.

The Indonesian government has implemented various measures to promote the plan to achieve this potential growth target, Minister Luhut also said. Indonesia has reached an agreement with the Beijing Gene Research Institute to conduct a study aimed at ensuring high-quality durian for export.

In addition, the Indonesian government has established approximately 100 hectares of durian plantations in North Sumatra and West Papua provinces and is planning to expand to other provinces, including Central Sulawesi. These locations are believed to be suitable for growing durian trees that meet the import standards of the Chinese market.

According to data from the Indonesian Statistics Agency, in 2023, Indonesia produced 1.85 million tons of durian, with over 50% of the total output coming from Java Island. As the largest durian-producing region in the country, East Java province achieved a production of over 480,000 tons last year.

For years, the Indonesian government has been urging farmers across the country to grow durian trees because the fruit has become a valuable commodity. Those who previously cultivated oil palm across the country five years ago are now being encouraged by Indonesian President Joko Widodo to plant durian trees and start a business, as he believes the crop has better prospects in the international market than crude palm oil.
