Sekong: Potential from the "East-West Economic Corridor"

Strategically located connecting the southern provinces of Laos and serving as an important transit point on the East-West economic corridor, Sekong boasts a 280 km long border with Vietnam.

During the period 2021-2025, the economy is projected to grow at an average rate of 6% per year; the province's total income will reach over 1,700 billion kip; per capita income will exceed 32 million kip per year..., with agriculture and forestry accounting for 15.3%; industry 32.3%, and services 52.4%. Main exports include electricity, coffee, raw wood products, coal, and rubber. Main imports include equipment for agriculture , hydropower projects, and mining projects; cement, steel, petroleum products, chemicals for agriculture, and plant seeds.

Sekong Province has the following investment potential and strengths:

- Land resources: suitable for growing rice, coffee, fruit trees, flowers, ginseng, medicinal herbs, vegetables, natural tea, raising fish, poultry, and livestock.

- Mineral potential: gold ore, coal, copper, iron ore, lime, blue stone, construction sand, rare earth minerals and other ores; Some mineral resources have already attracted investors for research and exploration, but some projects are behind schedule and have limited development conditions. Therefore, the goal is to attract investors with capital, advanced technology, and the capacity to implement projects most effectively.

- Investment potential in clean energy: Wind power in Dak Chung district; solar power in Kalum and Lamam districts; hydropower in Ca-lum, Dak Chung, Lamam and Tha-teng districts.

- Transportation potential (priority for highway investment): Sekong Province is located in the middle of the southern provinces of Laos, serving as a connecting point for the East-West economic corridor.

- Potential for ecotourism development: Sekong Province has a total of 42 hotels and guesthouses, capable of accommodating 400 domestic and international guests per night, 47 restaurants and entertainment shops, 9 ecotourism resorts and food gardens; it possesses natural, historical, and cultural tourism resources (Pheck Falls, Hoa Kon Falls, Phai Mai Falls, Keng Luang, warm springs in Kalum District, Nang Lao Cave, Phu Ngoa viewpoint, Phu Kung King), national park tourist areas, and handicraft villages.
