Bayern boss reveals bitter truth about Florian Wirtz case

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has admitted that the Bavarians cannot match Liverpool's financial might in the race to sign the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder.

Wirtz is set to earn £355,000 a week at Liverpool.

Eberl admitted in an interview with Sky Germany : “To be honest, I don’t know if we can pay the fee that Liverpool paid. Probably not. The club rates Wirtz very highly, he is an excellent player, but when one door closes, another opens. The club’s financial resources must be spent wisely.”

According to European media, Wirtz is close to becoming Liverpool's record signing with a value of 150 million euros. The deal is expected to be completed in the next few days. The German star will become the most expensive new signing in Premier League history, breaking the current record held by Enzo Fernandez, when he moved to Chelsea for 121 million euros in 2022.

Previously, Bayern Munich seemed to have the advantage in the Wirtz deal. However, the German club could not meet the transfer fee and salary for the player like Liverpool. Wirtz will become one of the highest-paid players in Liverpool's history, with a salary of up to 355,000 pounds/week, second only to Mohamed Salah (400,000 pounds/week).

Wirtz possesses speed, technique, tactical vision and good finishing ability. Therefore, he can play in any position in the attack, even as a central midfielder. In the 2024/25 season, this player played most in the role of a playmaker, contributing to 29 goals in all competitions for Leverkusen (16 goals, 13 assists).

Wirtz will become Liverpool's third signing of the summer, after the Merseyside club signed Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for €40m. The Dutch right-back has also signed a five-year contract and completed a medical last month.

The other name joining the "Red Brigade" is Armin Pecsi, a young Hungarian goalkeeper. Liverpool are also negotiating with Bournemouth about the case of left-back Milos Kerkez, who is valued at around 45 million euros.
