Towards the end of the year, the number of orders for delivery drivers usually increases by 20-30% compared to normal.

Single "storm"

In recent years, delivery services have boomed alongside the popularity of e-commerce. Consumers are becoming increasingly familiar with ordering goods from the comfort of their homes with just a few taps on their phones or computers. Nguyen Quynh Thu, a Viettel Post delivery driver with three years of experience in the Le Chan ward area of Hai Phong, shared: “Every day, I deliver about 130-140 orders. The workload skyrockets during Black Friday, when the number of orders is one and a half times higher than usual. There will definitely be even more orders during the upcoming Christmas season.”

A delivery driver's income largely depends on the number of completed orders. For COD (cash on delivery) orders, Ms. Thu receives 5,000 VND per order, while orders with free shipping (0 VND) are paid 4,000 VND per order. However, to complete a delivery, Ms. Thu often has to return to the same location 2-3 times because the customer is busy or doesn't answer the phone.

Not only Viettel Post, but other shipping companies are also entering their peak season. Nguyen Van Nhi, a shipper for J&T Express, is also experiencing his busiest season of the year. Nhi is in charge of the Nguyen Binh, Doan Ket, and Dang Ma La areas (Le Chan ward). He delivers approximately 130 orders per day. The weather at the end of the year is unpredictable; even a single rain shower can wet goods, affecting delivery schedules and even creating dangerous conditions due to slippery roads.

The biggest pressure comes not only from the sudden surge in orders but also from the risk of canceled orders. Tran Van Tien, a delivery driver in Thanh Dong ward ( Hai Phong ), said: “From November to the end of the year, the number of orders I deliver each day increases by 20-30% compared to previous months. Some deliveries go smoothly, but sometimes I have to go back 3-4 times and still can't find the customer. Some people order just for fun, and then they hang up when I call. Therefore, this job requires not only good health but also perseverance. It's busier at the end of the year, but the income is better, so I try my best.”

Many pressures

Shippers are the people who keep the flow of goods constant, helping to make the shopping market more vibrant.

Not only shippers, but also transportation companies are facing immense pressure. Warehouse systems, personnel, and order processing technology all need to increase capacity to avoid congestion. Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Director of Tuan Anh Co., Ltd., a transportation company in Thanh Dong ward, said: “Normally, our company's shippers only deliver about 70-80 orders a day, but now that has increased to 110-120 orders per day.”

Intense competition among shipping companies has led to the introduction of numerous incentive policies: flat rates, multiple redelivery support, etc. This benefits consumers but also puts pressure on delivery drivers. The end of the year is also a time to test the operational capacity of businesses and shipping companies. Even a single delay in the chain, from warehousing and sorting to delivery, can cause congestion and damage reputation and brand image.

E-commerce is one of the fastest-growing sectors. To ensure goods reach even the most remote corners and villages, each delivery driver acts as an "ambassador" for the delivery system, connecting the online world with real life. Besides delivering goods, they also collect payments, assist customers with checking their orders, and handle unexpected situations. The job may seem simple, but it requires patience, skill, and, most importantly, good health.

Despite the hard work, many delivery drivers say they stick with the job because of the flexibility in their time and stable income. With high intensity, especially during the year-end period, delivery drivers can earn 10-19 million VND per month. The delivery driver profession is also seen as a "lifeline" for many unemployed workers or those looking to supplement their income.
