On September 8, 2025, the Department of Criminal Investigation of Corruption, Economic Crimes , Smuggling, and Environmental Crimes (Hai Phong City Police) discovered a ring that purchased pork infected with African Swine Fever and then "transformed" it into clean canned goods. These individuals had collected over 120 tons of pork and stored it in the warehouse of Ha Long Canned Food Joint Stock Company, of which approximately 2 tons had already been processed into canned meat. On January 7, Hai Phong City Police initiated a criminal case and indicted nine suspects for violating food safety regulations.

A survey of the Ha Tinh market revealed that canned products from Ha Long Canned Food Joint Stock Company are widely available in retail stores and shopping malls. Many business representatives stated that these products sell quite well, especially the Hai Phong-branded canned pate. However, after learning that these food products are not safe, most stores and supermarkets in Ha Tinh have simultaneously recalled and stopped selling all canned products from Ha Long Canned Food Joint Stock Company.

Mr. Vo Cong Hai, Director of Winmart Ha Tinh Supermarket, shared: “Immediately upon receiving this information from the mass media, in order to ensure the rights and health of consumers, Winmart Ha Tinh Supermarket temporarily removed all processed pork products from Ha Long Canned Food Joint Stock Company from its shelves, pending the final conclusion from the authorities. Some customers who had purchased the products wished to return them, and we also assisted with exchanges to ensure maximum protection of consumer rights.”

People in Ha Tinh are more cautious when choosing ready-made food.

According to Mr. Hai, the Winmart supermarket system in Ha Tinh has proactively secured alternative sources of goods to meet customer shopping needs. “Winmart Ha Tinh has added many other types of canned meat such as Vissan, CP, Huu Nghi… The diversity of products and brands allows customers to choose freely according to their needs. In addition, Winmart supermarket always adheres to strict import conditions and procedures, resolutely saying no to unsafe food,” Mr. Hai stated.

At Bach Hoa Xanh supermarket (Ha Huy Tap Street, Thanh Sen Ward), a representative stated that they have recalled all products related to Ha Long Canned Food Joint Stock Company throughout their system and are coordinating with the supplier to return the goods already in storage. In the event that a supplier violates the contract, the company will be responsible for cooperating with relevant authorities to handle the matter and ensure consumer rights are protected.

Information about the incident not only affected supermarkets and stalls but also significantly impacted the psychology of consumers in Ha Tinh. Ms. Le Thi Lan (Cam Trung commune), who regularly uses "cot den" pate as breakfast for her children, shared: "For me, ensuring safety in daily meals for my family is always a top priority. When I heard the negative information, I was very worried because I had previously used products from Ha Long Canned Food Joint Stock Company. I am looking into using other brands while waiting for the official conclusion from the authorities," Ms. Lan shared.

Similarly, Ms. Dang Thuy Huyen (Thanh Sen ward) also expressed concern about the food safety issues surrounding canned goods from Ha Long: “This is a type of food I have trusted for a long time because it comes from a reputable company. When I heard the information about the product being made from diseased pork, I felt very worried about my health. Although supermarkets offer exchanges and returns, my trust in this brand has significantly decreased. From now on, I will be more cautious and carefully consider before buying any product, especially ready-to-eat food.”

According to representatives of stores in Ha Tinh, the cautious and apprehensive attitude of customers in the face of unclear situations is understandable; however, consumers need to have a discerning eye to choose products that ensure food safety and hygiene.

Ms. Hoang Thi Nhung, owner of Nhung Tai retail supermarket (Cam Xuyen commune), said: “Currently, while awaiting conclusions from the authorities, we have stopped selling products from P Ha Long Canned Food Company. However, consumers should not be overly worried because in the procurement process, the supermarket has committed to and strictly checked with the supplier regarding food safety standards… We continue to closely monitor the developments of the case, listen to and fully implement the directives from the authorities.”

The prompt recall of the controversial and infringing products by supermarkets and stores in Ha Tinh, along with increased inspections of their supply sources and a commitment to protecting customer rights, is highly commendable. The case involving Ha Long Canned Food Joint Stock Company serves as another reminder for consumers to always be extremely cautious in choosing safe food products to ensure the health of themselves, their families, and the community.

Ha Long Canned Food Joint Stock Company has submitted an explanation regarding the incident to the Hanoi Stock Exchange. According to the explanation, the company identified this as a "serious incident in the supply chain, with a certain impact on its reputation and short-term production and business operations." However, they affirmed that the entire batch of infringing raw materials was not used in production and was not supplied to the market. The company stated that after the incident involving the import of diseased pork, they reviewed their entire input control process and supplier selection to strengthen risk prevention measures in the supply chain.
