The next full moon will appear at 9:26 p.m. on August 19 (Vietnam time), according to Space . What's special is that this is not just a regular full moon, but a super blue moon (a combination of a super moon and a blue moon).

In Vietnam, this day is the 79th anniversary of the successful August Revolution, and is also the Traditional Day of the People's Public Security.

According to the Hanoi Astronomical Association (HAS), if the weather is favorable, astronomy lovers can completely observe this unique phenomenon because the time of the full moon is also the time when the moon rises highest in the sky in the evening.

According to NASA records, the term "supermoon" was first mentioned by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979. The concept was then used to refer to the Moon in its new or full moon phase within 90% of its closest distance to Earth.

The supermoon is also the largest and brightest full moon of the year, appearing about 30% brighter and 14% larger than normal when viewed from Earth.

While this number may seem huge, it is actually not easy to spot the difference with the naked eye, unless you are a professional observer.

Meanwhile, the name " blue moon" has nothing to do with the color of the moon, but comes from the name given to the third full moon in a season of four full moons. This is the traditional definition of a blue moon, and the kind we'll see on August 19.

Another definition of a blue moon comes from the name given to the second full moon that occurs in August. A typical example of this blue moon is in 2023, when the first full moon occurs on August 1. Then, on August 30 and 31, the full moon appears again.

Some experts say that the observed blue moon is about 5-7% larger and about 15% brighter than a normal full moon. However, observers do not need to prepare any eye protection when viewing the moon.

Supermoons are not uncommon. On average, supermoons can occur 3-4 times a year. However, super blue moons are less common, with only 1 in 33 supermoons meeting the criteria.
