The only student to become an Outstanding Young Citizen of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024.

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Among the 15 outstanding young citizens of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024, only one is a university student.

The only student among the 15 Outstanding Young Citizens of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024 is Nguyen Quoc Trung, a student of Chemistry, Faculty of Science , Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

Outstanding young citizen Nguyen Quoc Trung was born in 2003 and hails from Kien Giang province.

By his third year of university, Nguyen Quoc Trung had published 11 articles in international and domestic scientific journals; and led two basic-level research projects focused on using natural products in health protection.

Among them, one project was successfully completed and approved, focusing on the research of utilizing climbing chrysanthemum (an invasive species that poses a risk of disrupting the ecological balance) growing in the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City to synthesize silver nanoparticles with strong antibacterial properties and no toxicity to cells, contributing to the protection and improvement of the local ecological environment.

Furthermore, during a Spring Volunteer Campaign in Can Gio District, Nguyen Quoc Trung and his fellow volunteers accidentally discovered that the essential oil of the white toad tree has potential in combating Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, thus enhancing the value of this plant.

Nguyen Quoc Trung continues to develop his passion for scientific research in the fields of pharmaceutical chemistry and natural compounds under the guidance of reputable scientists.

In 2024, Nguyen Quoc Trung received several prestigious scholarships, including two international research internship scholarships at Taipei Medical University (China).

Here, Nguyen Quoc Trung was introduced to a new research direction related to the inhibition of glioblastoma tumors - a type of malignant brain cancer.

In this interdisciplinary study, Trung discovered the mechanism by which the CHID1 gene contributes to the development and metastasis of cancer cells.

This initial success has opened up new avenues of research in using natural compounds to kill cancer cells while minimizing toxicity to patients.

Nguyen Quoc Trung isolated and utilized compounds from the Annonaceae family to inhibit the growth of glioblastoma, contributing to improved public health, especially in Vietnam, where research on glioblastoma is still relatively new. Among these, compound MB04 from soursop leaves showed strong inhibitory activity against glioblastoma cell lines.

Compared to current treatments, MB04 showed a 10-fold higher inhibitory effect, demonstrating its potential in treating glioblastoma and contributing to the exploitation of Vietnam's natural medicinal resources to find new, safer, and more effective chemotherapy drugs.

In addition to his achievements in scientific research, Nguyen Quoc Trung is also an "Exemplary Student Party Member" with many notable contributions to community activities, international integration, and student movements.

In 2024, Nguyen Quoc Trung was one of 19 outstanding young Party members of the Ho Chi Minh City National University Party Committee in implementing the "Each young Party member, one good deed" movement, achieving the titles of "Ho Chi Minh City 5 Good Student", "Ho Chi Minh City Young Talent in Learning" and many other excellent achievements.

Student Nguyen Quoc Trung is one of three candidates from the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City to receive the title of Young Citizen of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024.

Two other young scientists from the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City who received this title are Dr. Pham Thanh Tuan Anh, born in 1992, from the University of Science, and Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Vinh, born in 1994, from the University of Health Sciences.

Both of these individuals will receive the Golden Globe Award for science in 2024.

Dr. Pham Thanh Tuan Anh and his research team have successfully published 56 articles in prestigious international scientific journals ranked in the Q1 and Q2 categories, and 15 articles in national scientific journals; and 10 reports presented at national and international scientific conferences.

Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Vinh has accumulated 19 publications in prestigious international journals listed in the Scopus/ISI database; he also led one research project at the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, which was successfully completed with a "good" rating.

Mr. Phuoc Vinh also holds one global international patent, one utility model, two products transferred to businesses and undergoing industrial-scale trial production, eleven published textbooks, and five national awards.

In 2024, Nguyen Phuoc Vinh and his colleagues completed the research project "Study on the current status of antifungal drug resistance in oral candidiasis in cancer patients in Vietnam and potential solutions to combat this situation". This is the first study in Vietnam to address the resistance status and mechanisms of resistance to antifungal drugs in immunocompromised Vietnamese patients.
