Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí26/01/2025

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Among the 15 outstanding young citizens of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024, only one is a university student.

The only student among the 15 Outstanding Young Citizens of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024 is Nguyen Quoc Trung, a student of Chemistry, Faculty of Science , Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

Outstanding young citizen Nguyen Quoc Trung was born in 2003 and hails from Kien Giang province.

By his third year of university, Nguyen Quoc Trung had published 11 articles in international and domestic scientific journals; led two basic-level research projects with the orientation of using natural products in health protection.

In particular, one project was accepted and met the requirements for researching the use of creeping daisy grass (an invasive alien species that can cause ecological imbalance) growing in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City to synthesize silver nanoparticles with strong antibacterial properties and not toxic to cells, contributing to protecting and improving the local ecological environment.

In addition, during a Spring Volunteer Campaign in Can Gio District, Nguyen Quoc Trung and his fellow volunteers accidentally discovered that the essential oil of the white tamarind tree has the potential to fight against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, helping to increase the value of this tree.

Nguyen Quoc Trung continues to develop his passion for scientific research in the fields of pharmaceutical chemistry and natural compounds under the guidance of reputable scientists.

In 2024, Nguyen Quoc Trung received many prestigious scholarships, including 2 international research internship scholarships at Taipei Medical University (China).

Here, Nguyen Quoc Trung was exposed to new research directions related to the inhibition of glioblastoma - a malignant brain cancer.

In this interdisciplinary study, Trung discovered the mechanism by which the CHID1 gene contributes to the development and metastasis of cancer cells.

This initial success has opened up a new research direction in the use of natural compounds to destroy cancer cells and limit toxicity to patients.

Nguyen Quoc Trung has isolated and used compounds from the Annonaceae family to inhibit the growth of glioblastoma, contributing to improving public health, especially in Vietnam, where research directions on glioblastoma are still very new. In particular, compound MB04 from soursop leaves showed strong inhibitory activity against glioblastoma cell lines.

Compared to current treatments, MB04 showed a 10-fold higher inhibitory effect, demonstrating its potential in treating glioblastoma and contributing to the exploitation of Vietnam's natural medicinal resources to find new, safer, and more effective chemotherapy drugs.

In addition to his achievements in scientific research, Nguyen Quoc Trung is also a "Bright Student Party Member" with many marks in community activities, international integration and student movements.

In 2024, Nguyen Quoc Trung was one of 19 outstanding young Party members of the Ho Chi Minh City National University Party Committee in implementing the "Each young Party member, one good deed" movement, achieving the titles of "Ho Chi Minh City 5 Good Student", "Ho Chi Minh City Young Talent in Learning" and many other excellent achievements.

Student Nguyen Quoc Trung is one of three candidates from the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City to receive the title of Young Citizen of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024.

Two other young scientists from Ho Chi Minh City National University who received this title are Dr. Pham Thanh Tuan Anh, born in 1992, from the University of Natural Sciences, and Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Vinh, born in 1994, from the University of Health Sciences.

Both of these individuals will receive the Golden Globe Award for science in 2024.

Dr. Pham Thanh Tuan Anh and his research team have successfully published 56 articles in prestigious international scientific journals ranked in the Q1 and Q2 categories, and 15 articles in national scientific journals; and 10 reports presented at national and international scientific conferences.

Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Vinh has accumulated 19 publications in prestigious international journals in the Scopus/ISI list; he is the head of a project at Ho Chi Minh City National University that has been accepted with good results.

Mr. Phuoc Vinh also has 1 global international patent, 1 useful solution, 2 products transferred to businesses and tested on an industrial scale, 11 published textbooks and 5 national awards.

In 2024, Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Vinh and his colleagues completed the topic "Research on the current status of antifungal drug resistance of oropharyngeal candidiasis in cancer patients in Vietnam and potential solutions to combat this condition". This is the first study in Vietnam to address the status of resistance and the mechanism of resistance to antifungal drugs in immunocompromised patients in Vietnam.
