Speaking at the awards ceremony, Sinner congratulated his opponent: "Congratulations to Alcaraz and his team. He will definitely be the top contender when we get to Paris. He is the strongest player on clay. Congratulations and good luck for the rest of the season.

I want to thank my team. The last few months have not been easy. For me, reaching the final is a great result. We have trained a lot. We can be proud of the results we have achieved today. I did not win the final but I am happy with the award. It is a great success since we have been here.

Jasmine Paolini won the women's singles and the women's doubles with Sara Errani. Lorenzo Musetti and I did our part in the men's singles. We hope the Italian fans will be satisfied with this tournament."

Despite the defeat, Sinner had positive comments about his performance at the Italian Open. This was Sinner's first tournament back after a three-month suspension. The Italian won five times in Rome.

"The first set definitely changed the game. But overall I'm very happy about the tournament. Reaching the final gives me hope, confidence to play some good tennis in Paris. Let's see what happens there," Sinner said after the defeat.

Despite losing to Alcaraz, Sinner remained positive: "After three months, reaching the final means a lot to me, as well as to my team. I'm also happy that my family is here and everything else."

Sinner was aiming for his fifth ATP Masters 1000 title and first in Rome. With a raucous crowd at Campo Centrale cheering him on, the world number one put Alcaraz under pressure in the opening set before losing quickly in the second. Alcaraz, a seven-time Masters 1000 champion, now leads Sinner 7-4 in the head-to-head series.

Sinner added of his optimistic outlook: "Playing in Italy, in Rome, is very special. The support of the audience for me is like for a little boy. Technically, there are things we need to improve to play better in Paris.

I've improved more than I expected in many ways, everything is good. It's been a great week for me, with some really good matches and some that could have been better. But that's tennis, there are always ups and downs."

Sinner is 12-1 this season and is second in the ATP Live Race To Turin. The 23-year-old will now turn his attention to Roland Garros, where he will be aiming to win his fourth major title and first on clay.
