To mitigate this risk, Apple has set up alerts so that iPhone and iPad users are alerted when an unknown AirTag is tracking them. This has had a positive impact, and in the West, some users have discovered and reported to local authorities that they are being tracked using AirTags, helping to eliminate the risk.
However, these warnings are only for Apple device owners, and so far those with only Android smartphones have no way to deal with the possibility of being tracked using AirTags.
It is known that during the Google I/O 2023 Conference in May, Google revealed that it was developing tracking warnings and expected them to be deployed on devices running Android 6.0 and above by the end of this year. And the good news is that recently in an announcement on the Internet, Google said that this feature has been launched.
The company also added some information about how the feature works as follows:
"You can tap the alert to learn more about the unknown tracking device that's tracking you, as well as see a map of where it's been detected. You can also tap the Play sound button to make it play a sound that can help you locate it without its owner knowing."
Google also emphasized that this feature not only warns users but also includes some further handling options:
"When you hold the (tracking) device close to the back of the phone, some Bluetooth tracking devices may share their serial number or additional information about their owner, such as the last four digits of their phone number. You may also be instructed to disable the Bluetooth tracking device, preventing its owner from receiving future location updates."
Google says the first “unknown tracking device” the alerts will work with is Apple’s AirTag, which isn’t surprising since AirTag has quickly become the most popular tracker in the world .
While this feature is arguably overdue, it's clear that with the popularity of tracking devices like AirTag, we all need to stay safe and know if someone is trying to track us.
