On June 17, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health announced that after a surge from mid-April to the end of May, the COVID-19 epidemic had begun to decline after week 22 (from May 23 to 29).
Specifically, through the infectious disease surveillance system, in week 23 (June 5-11), the entire city recorded 69 cases of COVID-19. In week 24 (June 9-15), there were only 32 cases (14 inpatients and 18 outpatients), a 66% decrease compared to the peak number of cases in week 22 with 94 cases.
This is seen as a positive sign, showing that the city is gradually and effectively controlling the new wave of COVID-19 infections after a surge from mid-April to the end of May.
"Although the number of COVID-19 cases is decreasing, the health sector remains vigilant and does not neglect disease prevention and control efforts because the risk of severe complications and death is always present, especially in high-risk groups," the Department of Health emphasized.
The Department of Health stated that recently, the city has recorded two COVID-19-related deaths among patients with multiple underlying chronic medical conditions.
Therefore, people are advised not to panic but also not to be complacent about the disease.
Adherence to the Ministry of Health 's recommendations for epidemic prevention and control remains crucial in protecting public health, especially given that the NB.1.8.1 variant is still circulating and there is limited scientific data on its virulence and rate of transmission.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health continues to direct medical units to strengthen surveillance, early detection of COVID-19 cases and new variants, and to be prepared to respond to possible situations, ensuring the admission, care, and treatment of patients.
The Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC), in close collaboration with hospitals and the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU), continues to perform gene sequencing of new cases to assess the spread trends of the circulating NB.1.8.1 variant in the city, as well as the potential emergence of other variants in the future.
Community communication activities need to be further strengthened to raise public awareness, especially among high-risk groups such as the elderly, people with underlying health conditions, and those who have not received all doses of the vaccine.
What precautions should people take to prevent the spread of COVID-19?
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health advises people to take proactive measures to protect themselves, their families, and the community, including:
- Wear a mask in public places, on public transport, and at healthcare facilities.
- Wash your hands frequently with clean water, soap, or hand sanitizer.
- Avoid gathering in crowded places unless absolutely necessary.
- Increase physical activity, exercise, and maintain a balanced diet.
- Monitor your health and go to a medical facility immediately if you experience symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
