A representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports shared with VTC News reporters: The fashion show titled "New Tradition," which took place on May 6, 2023, did not follow the administrative procedures stipulated by the Department of Culture and Sports.

Currently, the Inspectorate of the Department of Culture and Sports is coordinating with relevant agencies to further verify the incident and will handle it in accordance with current laws and regulations.

Designer Tuong Danh's "New Tradition" fashion show did not follow the administrative procedures stipulated by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports.

Previously, designer Tuong Danh's New Tradition fashion show sparked controversy with images of models wearing traditional conical hats and stylized bodices that exposed their backs and buttocks.

Another image that caused outrage was a male model wearing a yellow, off-the-shoulder dress with a high collar. During the performance, he also held a golden bell in his hand. In addition, many other designs inspired by the ao dai and ao yếm (traditional Vietnamese bodice) also featured daring cutouts...

This collection faced strong opposition from experts. Artist and ao dai researcher Nguyen Duc Binh stated: "The person who created this outfit does not understand tradition and cultural identity. This outfit does not represent the cultural identity of the Vietnamese people."

Vietnamese cultural identity, reflected in traditional clothing, is characterized by modesty, humility, and simplicity. However, many designers today are glossing over this with terms like "inspiration," "modern flair," and "the voice of our times" to create inappropriate and outrageous outfits. They are mistaken. There is no such thing as inspiration. Clothing, whether modernized or not, must still reflect the cultural identity of the Vietnamese people.

Meanwhile, Ton That Minh Khoi, the project leader of the historical project Thien Nam Lich Dai Hau Phi, criticized: "Since when has the traditional conical hat been associated with such vulgar and obscene images of bare buttocks? I can't believe my eyes!"

Since when has the image of Buddhist monks begging for alms, a deeply sacred image reminiscent of the original monastic order, been so horribly distorted on the fashion runway?

All of this stems from a brand falsely claiming to offer "traditional Vietnamese clothing," and the outrage is at its peak. Never, ever use the excuse of "innovation" or "creativity" to brutally and savagely destroy traditional culture like this! I strongly condemn and oppose this collection and brand!

Meanwhile, many viewers also expressed their disapproval of the collection. One person wrote: "The designer wants to incorporate traditional themes into the designs but doesn't care about the values ​​and image of Vietnamese people throughout generations. The image of the traditional Vietnamese woman is extremely beautiful and has its own unique charm. No matter how much innovation and modernization is desired, the core of tradition must be preserved."

Another viewer was even more critical: "Even though it's lingerie, a halter top is still a symbol of femininity, representing softness, grace, and elegance, not something outrageous to pair with thongs and high heels like a stripper."
