Shocking, iPhone 17 Series will no longer have the "breakthrough" titanium border

Apple has suddenly changed its strategy, the titanium material that was once promoted as a "Pro feature" will no longer be used.

Two years ago, Apple launched the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max with a new titanium design. This material continues to be the differentiating factor for the iPhone 16 Pro.

However, the latest news will surprise fans, no iPhone Pro in the 17 generation will be equipped with a titanium frame. On the contrary, Apple has made a more shocking and confusing move by only putting titanium material on a single iPhone 17 model.

The iPhone 17 Air will be the only new model to come with titanium. Last fall, when rumors about the iPhone 17 series began to swirl, one of the most notable reports was about the design materials.

According to The Information, Apple will remove titanium from the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max lines. Instead, the new Pro models will use aluminum in the outer shell design, which is a major reversal not long after titanium was first introduced.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says titanium won't disappear entirely. Instead, the iPhone 17 Air will be the only one with a titanium design. Kuo says it will have a titanium-aluminum alloy metal frame with a lower titanium content than the metal frames on the current Pro and Pro Max. So the iPhone 17 Air will be the only model with titanium.

Analyst Jeff Pu also reaffirmed that titanium will be present on the iPhone 17 Air in his recent research report. This move is surprising for many reasons.

Apple has always promoted titanium as a 'Pro' feature and a key design highlight. The iPhone 17 Air is the lower-priced model, but has a more 'premium' material than the Pro line.

If Apple wanted to phase out titanium over time, why equip it on a brand new model that's unlikely to change for a while?

Assuming Apple switches back to stainless steel for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max's frame, using titanium for the Air could make sense to keep the weight down.

But in reality, aluminum is lighter than titanium, which is why it's puzzling that Apple would use any titanium in its new thin and light model.
