Shocked by the magic bowl containing the ancient spell

Magic bowls were among ancient artifacts confiscated in a surprise raid.

Suspecting that an antiquities smuggling ring was operating, Israeli police, in coordination with the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), conducted a raid in the Ramat Shlomo center near Jerusalem. Photo: @ COLlive.

Known as “magic bowls,” these bowls, inscribed with spells and curses in Hebrew and Babylonian-Aramaic, were used to ward off curses, ward off evil spirits and diseases, and were often placed under the floor of a home for protection. Photo: @IAA.

Further archaeological research revealed that the first bowl bore the name of the homeowner, Joshua ben (son of Perachiah), and a spell to ward off destructive demons from his home. Photo: @IAA.

“These bowls originate from ancient sites in Mesopotamia – modern-day Iraq. These spells were written by a shaman specifically for a particular homeowner, according to his or her personal needs,” said Amir Ganor, director of the Anti-Looting Division of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). The raid also uncovered ivory and bone objects decorated in the Phoenician style with Egyptian motifs, including scenes from the animal kingdom , along with geometric ornaments.
