On the evening of October 13, the semi-final match between The Cong Tan Cang and Ho Chi Minh City Police took place. Before the match, many people thought that Ho Chi Minh City Police would enter the final of this year's National Volleyball Championship.
The reason is because even though they were newly promoted, they quickly invested heavily to bring in many stars both domestically and internationally. In the group stage, Ho Chi Minh City Police won 6 matches and only lost 1 match against Border Guard.
Therefore, they were expected to win the ticket to the final and get revenge against the defending champions. But then, it seems that losing Polish star Michal Kubiak due to injury has become too big a problem.
The remaining foreign player, Luka Tadic (Serbia), could not make a big enough mark on the attacking front of Ho Chi Minh City Police. On the contrary, The Cong Tan Cang, although not having world- famous foreign players, found someone who was very suitable for their playing style.
That person is Rivan Nurmulki, an Indonesian opposite player who has been a fear for many Southeast Asian teams for many years. With his knowledge of regional volleyball, he quickly adapted to the playing style of The Cong Tan Cang.
It was Rivan who had a brilliant day of competition, helping the army team create a surprise by defeating Ho Chi Minh City Police after 3 sets with scores of 25-21, 25-23, 30-28.
This is a somewhat shocking result, as the Southern team has shown dominance for most of the season. They will also play the third place match against LPBank Ninh Binh and that is an opportunity for the whole team to get a consolation bronze medal.
Meanwhile, this year's men's volleyball final was a match between two military representatives, Border Guard and Tan Cang Sports.
