Starting from the 5th day of the Lunar New Year, along the hills of Nghia Loc commune, Nghia Dan district, people are busily planting trees. Some are digging holes, others are preparing materials and seedlings.
Ms. Tran Thi Hieu from Nghia Loc commune, Nghia Dan district, who is tending to acacia trees, said: "To prepare for the spring reforestation project, before Tet (Lunar New Year), we started clearing the undergrowth and digging holes. After Tet, we hired more workers to organize the planting of 3 hectares of forest in the spring. In the area near the road, we even built a fence to protect against buffaloes and cows that might damage the trees."
A new trend among the people in Nghia Loc commune, Nghia Dan district, is the focus on intensive forest planting, such as digging holes and applying fertilizer, planting high-quality seedlings, and following proper care procedures.
Mr. Lai Van Duong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Loc commune, said: Nghia Loc commune has favorable conditions for planting raw material forests with 150 hectares of acacia forest. Recognizing that forest planting is an effective way to develop the economy, alleviate poverty, and even create wealth, the annual forest planting plan is always actively supported by the local authorities and people. To date, the people have planted 30 out of 150 hectares of forest in the spring planting season.
Mr. Lam Van Thang, Head of the Agriculture Department of Nghia Dan district, added: In 2024, the province assigned the district to plant 1,000 hectares. Specifically, in this year's spring planting season, the district has implemented planting on over 400 hectares. To date, the district has planted over 100 hectares of spring forest. For most of the planting area, farmers have already cleared the undergrowth and dug holes to prepare for planting and keep up with the schedule.

Furthermore, at this time, Song Hieu Forestry and Agriculture Company Limited is the unit currently planting the largest area of large timber forests in the province. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hoang - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Song Hieu Forestry and Agriculture Company Limited - said: This year, the unit is planting over 600 hectares of acacia for raw materials (mainly large timber forests), of which 100 out of 400 hectares have been planted in the spring season, and it is expected that the remaining 300 hectares of spring forest will be completed around March 15th.
To improve the productivity and quality of acacia trees, the unit has focused on investing in the correct technical procedures right from the planting stage, such as investing over 20 million VND/hectare of forest, including fertilizers, hole digging, and ensuring the quality of seedlings including hybrid acacia (BV10 and BV16 varieties) and Acacia mangium (imported varieties as guided by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development).

Currently, many nurseries in Do Luong are ready to supply high-quality acacia seedlings. Mr. Phan Hong Tien, Director of Do Luong Forestry One-Member Limited Company, said: The company currently has two nurseries and has produced over 1 million acacia seedlings to serve spring reforestation for people in Do Luong district and some communes of Yen Thanh district. The company's seedling production adheres to strict technical requirements; seedlings must meet the standard of 30cm in height and 0.3cm in diameter before being sold for planting, ensuring a high survival rate.
According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Do Luong District: In 2024, Do Luong District was assigned to plant over 600 hectares of acacia trees. Currently, the communes have planted over 120 hectares, with over 300 hectares of spring forest remaining where farmers are clearing undergrowth and digging holes for planting. Simultaneously, the district has assigned technical staff to the grassroots level to supervise, train, and guide the forest planting process in the communes. From clearing and processing undergrowth to digging holes, fertilizing, and caring for the trees, everything is being done according to the correct procedures and techniques.

According to the Forest Protection Department's report, Nghe An province aims to plant over 18,500 hectares of new timber forests in 2024 to meet the needs of wood processing factories in the area. This spring alone, the province will plant 8,000 hectares (including approximately 500 hectares of large timber forests). Currently, localities are actively planting spring forests to ensure progress, having already planted over 1,500 hectares. The spring planting season is expected to be completed by the end of March 2024.
Currently, the province has 25 licensed seed production and trading units, which have produced approximately 10 million forestry seedlings of various types for spring reforestation. To ensure seedling quality, the Forest Protection Department recommends that localities strengthen the management of seed production and trading, strictly controlling all stages of the production chain; and that people use good quality seeds with clear origins.
The Forest Protection Department advises people to replant forests immediately after harvesting, ensuring no land is left fallow and fulfilling the year's reforestation plan. Local authorities should assign officials to oversee reforestation efforts and manage forest protection to ensure effective spring reforestation in their areas.
