The northern communes are focusing on harvesting the spring rice crop.

In early July, the atmosphere of spring rice harvesting is bustling throughout the northern communes of the province. On the terraced fields and vast rice paddies in the communes of Bach Thong, Yen Phong, Con Minh, Nghien Loan, etc., farmers can be seen busy harvesting everywhere. This season, high-quality rice varieties continue to prove their post-harvest value.

While the southern communes of the province had basically completed their harvest by the end of June and were tending to the seedlings for the next crop, the northern communes are now entering the peak of their harvest season. In communes like Bang Thanh, Nghia Ta, Cam Giang, and Phu Thong, the fields are filled with the sight of people busily harvesting rice. Trucks loaded with sacks of rice lined up heading home have become a familiar scene, signaling a bountiful harvest season.

Before the merger, the entire province of Bac Kan (formerly) cultivated over 8,000 hectares of spring rice, of which about 1,500 hectares used high-quality rice varieties such as Japonica, QR1, HT1, and Ha Giang upland rice... Of this, about 210 hectares of high-quality rice were produced and sold through cooperatives, production groups, and agents and individuals.

However, not all localities were fortunate enough to have a successful harvest. Due to the impact of prolonged heavy rains in May and June, many spring rice fields in communes such as Thuong Minh, Vinh Thong, Phu Thong, Na Ri, etc., were flooded, causing the rice plants to flatten, resulting in a significant decrease in yield in some areas.

In fact, in many communes, high-quality rice varieties continue to demonstrate their strength and value. Among them, rice varieties such as Japonica, QR1, HT1… have shown outstanding results.

The communes of Yen Phong, Nghia Ta, Phu Thong, and Cam Giang (key agricultural production areas of the province before the merger)... have been and are forming concentrated areas for commercial rice production. In some areas, production is carried out organically, with linkages to cooperatives and production groups throughout the entire process, from production to product consumption.

The Yen Phong Commune Organic Rice Production Cooperative is one such example. Established in 2021, this cooperative now has over 16 hectares of rice certified as organic, mainly using Japonica and Bao Thai varieties.

Thanks to strict adherence to production processes from soil treatment, fertilization, cultivation to harvesting, the rice products of this cooperative are sold smoothly and well-received by the market.

Ms. Hoang Thi Chinh, a member of the Yen Phong Organic Rice Production Cooperative, shared: "The cooperative has expanded its production linkage to approximately 30 hectares of organic rice, mainly Japonica rice. We strictly adhere to technical procedures from land preparation to cultivation. As a result, after harvesting, the paddy sells for 12,000 VND/kg, and the milled rice sells for 22,000 VND/kg, higher than conventional rice varieties. The cooperative has received regular orders from various provinces."

Mr. Ha Cat Chan, from Na Ngang village (Cam Giang commune), was happily chatting while turning over his rice in the yard: "At the beginning of the spring season, the weather was dry, and in the middle of the season, there was prolonged rain, but luckily my rice fields weren't affected much. My family planted over 2,000 square meters of Japonica rice, and the harvested grains are firm and uniform, selling for a better price than other varieties."

Mr. Ha Cat Chan, from Na Ngang village, Cam Giang commune, is delighted because the yield this season is quite good.

The spring harvest is drawing to a close, making way for the next crop season with its continuing hopes. In the sun-drenched fields, people are busily harvesting, their radiant smiles heralding an efficient and sustainable agricultural development.
