A vibrant and rewarding summer activity was organized at the end of July by the Phan Thiet City Cultural, Sports and Tourism Center in coordination with the City Youth Union: the "Green Race" swimming competition.
Despite being the first time it was organized, the competition received a great deal of attention from parents and organizations, who provided support and encouragement for students to participate. There were 187 athletes, including 102 boys and 85 girls, from 11 clubs, businesses, wards, communes, and schools in the city, competing in four age groups. Specifically, the 8-9 age group competed in 25m individual freestyle and breaststroke for boys and girls. The 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15 age groups competed in 50m individual freestyle and breaststroke, and a 200m mixed relay for boys and girls.
Not only was the swimming in the blue pool exciting, but during the two days of competition (July 29-30), despite the storm and heavy rain, a large number of parents and youth union members enthusiastically cheered, creating a lively atmosphere at the swimming pool of the Provincial Sports Training, Coaching and Competition Center.
Arriving early in the stands, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (Phu Trinh ward) shared: “In the summer, there have been many tragic drowning incidents, with the victims being mostly children. Phan Thiet is a coastal city, so teaching children to swim is very necessary. Besides receiving instruction from the instructors on safe swimming and escape techniques, I am very happy that my grandson's physical strength and height have increased significantly. Therefore, I believe this swimming competition is very meaningful for the children to gain experience, improve their techniques, and become more confident and assertive.”
At the competition waiting area, Mr. Le Thanh Hung (from Phong Nam commune) carefully reminded his son to concentrate and stay calm. He said: “Besides school hours, my wife and I always encourage our son to play healthy sports like swimming and martial arts to improve his health and make his studies more effective. He has been swimming for over a year and is very excited to participate in the competition. Duc Tri registered for the 50m breaststroke event, age group 10-11.”
The fierce competition in the swimming race gave spectators a range of emotions, from suspense and excitement to disappointment, as the athletes' finishing times were very close. Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh (Phu Thuy ward) said: "Participating in the swimming competition was a fun experience for my child. Although the results weren't high and the swimming technique wasn't perfect, my child gained confidence and showed self-control in the water. I hope there will be many more beneficial and interesting competitions like this so that children can test their abilities."
According to the organizers, thanks to thorough preparation, the athletes demonstrated a high level of skill. The teams were evenly matched across all events, resulting in fierce competition. The first "Green Race" swimming competition also showcased the proactive efforts of local authorities, society, and schools in the city in promoting and constructing swimming pools for teaching and learning. This helped identify young talents for further training and development.
