Cam Ranh Airport is proposed to increase its capacity many times over, exceeding the planning soon.

(Chinhphu.vn) - According to the planning approved in Decision No. 1006/QD-TTg, by 2020, Cam Ranh International Airport is capable of receiving 5.5 million passengers/year, with a target of receiving 8.0 million passengers/year by 2030. However, in actual operation in 2019, this airport welcomed 10 million passengers through the port.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam ( Ministry of Construction ) has just submitted to the Ministry of Construction for consideration, procedures for appraisal and approval of the planning dossier of Cam Ranh International Airport for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050. According to the submission of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Cam Ranh International Airport is located in Bac Cam Ranh ward, Khanh Hoa province.

Maintain the runway, expand the terminal and aircraft parking lot

In the period 2021-2030, the airport is planned to reach level 4E and level I military airport; capacity of 25 million passengers/year and 50,000 tons of cargo/year; capable of operating aircraft types: B747, B777, B787, A321, A350 and equivalent or lower. Landing approach is precision landing gear according to CAT II standards.

During this period, Cam Ranh International Airport kept the runway 02R/20L, size 3,048mx45m, material shoulder on each side is 7.5m wide; demolished the existing runway 02L/20R, planned a new runway 02L/20R 360m away from runway 02R/20L, size 3,051mx45m; material shoulder on each side is 7.5m wide.

The planning for this phase determines the expansion of the aircraft parking lot to ensure 61 aircraft parking positions, including 44 code C positions (capable of operating A320, B737 and equivalent aircraft); 17 code E positions (capable of operating A330; B787 and equivalent aircraft).

Cam Ranh International Airport is also planned with a passenger terminal system with a capacity of 25 million passengers/year.

In which, build passenger terminal T1 according to demand, planned capacity of 21 million passengers/year (domestic more than 8 million passengers/year, international nearly 13 million passengers/year), keep terminal T2 (international) with capacity of 4 million passengers/year.

The port is also planned with a total land area for the cargo terminal of about 3 hectares. A new cargo terminal will be built to the north of the aircraft parking lot, adjacent to the hangar area; the cargo terminal capacity will meet about 50,000 tons of cargo/year by 2030.

This phase also includes the expansion of the aircraft parking lot to ensure 86 aircraft parking positions, including 61 code C positions and 25 code E positions.

In particular, expanding terminal T1 according to demand, with a planned capacity of 32 million passengers/year (domestic 12 million passengers/year, international 20 million passengers/year), keeping terminal T2 (international) with a capacity of 4 million passengers/year.

In addition, the cargo terminal is expanded towards terminal T2, the cargo terminal capacity meets about 100,000 tons of goods/year, can be expanded to ensure long-term development.

Notably, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam proposed planning a general aviation and private aviation area at Cam Ranh International Airport to be built on a land area of ​​about 9,610m2, with a general aviation aircraft parking area of ​​about 41,500m2.

It is estimated that the land use demand of the entire Cam Ranh International Airport in the period of 2021-2030 and vision to 2050 is about more than 628 hectares. Of which, the land area managed by civil aviation is about 588 hectares; the land area managed by the military is about more than 40 hectares.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said that the planning of Cam Ranh International Airport for the period up to 2020 and orientation to 2030 was approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1006/QD-TTg dated July 14, 2009 with a capacity scale of 5.5 million passengers/year by 2020 and 8 million passengers/year by 2030.

Since the planning was approved in 2009, Cam Ranh International Airport has been gradually invested in and completed many important items according to plan, put into effective operation, and contributed positively to the socio-economic development, security and defense of Khanh Hoa province as well as the aviation industry of the whole country.

According to operational data, in 2019 - before the COVID-19 outbreak - Cam Ranh welcomed more than 9.7 million passengers. By 2024, the output will reach nearly 7 million, approaching the approved planned capacity.

Faced with the increasing demand for air transport, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam believes that it is necessary to review and adjust the planning of Cam Ranh International Airport to ensure it is suitable for the new development stage.

"This is the basis for gradually investing in Cam Ranh's development in a reasonable and effective manner, meeting the requirements of socio-economic development and national defense and security of Khanh Hoa province and the South Central region, while keeping up with the strong growth of the aviation industry in the future," the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam emphasized.
