Waves 'swallow' concrete roads, 'swallow' uproot casuarina trees, and destroy Hoi An's coast

This year's storm season, people in Hoi An Tay ward ( Da Nang city) are facing another worry called landslides as day by day the big waves still roll in, violently destroying the coast.

According to local residents, for the past month, hundreds of meters of Hoi An coastline (section belonging to Tan Thanh block, Hoi An Tay ward) have been continuously put on alert due to strong waves "biting" deep into the shore, causing severe erosion.

Rising sea levels submerged giant sandbags that served as breakwaters.

After "breaking through" the embankment built from "giant" sandbags, the big waves "swallowed" the casuarina trees and continued to "eat" deeper into the shore.

The weak bamboo poles are still struggling to withstand the destructive force of the waves.

In recent days, a landslide about 50m long (located right behind a homestay combined with a coffee shop on Nguyen Phan Vinh Street) is showing signs of serious erosion. "This stretch of coastline was devastated by heavy rain and strong winds caused by storm No. 10 at the end of September. Four days ago, torrential rain combined with rising waves caused erosion to deepen the shore by 4-5 meters. Currently, the landslide is close to the coffee and beverage business area of the facility." - a resident of Tan Thanh block said.

According to the reporter's observation, a section of concrete road leading to the eroded area was also washed away by seawater and broken into pieces.

The warning sign "Dangerous landslide area, do not approach" (posted by local authorities on the trunk of a casuarina tree) is now lying on the sand after the casuarina tree was uprooted by the waves.

The leader of Hoi An Tay Ward People's Committee said that the landslide location is adjacent to the underground embankment project previously invested by the former Quang Nam Construction Investment Project Management Board. Faced with this situation, the ward has reported to the Da Nang City People's Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Environment for a solution.
