RT reported that according to the Geophysical Agency of the Russian Academy of Sciences , the earthquake was initially recorded at a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter about 136 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at around 11:30 a.m. on July 30 (local time).
The US Geological Survey (USGS) has raised the magnitude of the earthquake that occurred off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East from 8 to 8.8.
According to the USGS, the epicenter of this earthquake is similar to the magnitude 9 super earthquake in 1952, which caused a massive tsunami across the Pacific Ocean .

Russia's TASS news agency reported several people suffered minor injuries from the earthquake, including cases recorded at the Kamchatka regional airport.
Shortly after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula, a tsunami hit Russia's Far Eastern coast, flooding about 2,000 people in a port town, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said.
In a statement, Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said the tsunami flooded parts of the port town of Severo-Kurilsk. Residents were evacuated.
A video posted on Russian social media showed buildings in the town submerged in seawater.
Meanwhile, the United Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences predicts that significant aftershocks with magnitudes up to 7.5 will likely continue to occur for at least another month.
The earthquake prompted tsunami warnings for parts of the Pacific, including Japan, Hawaii, Russia and Ecuador. Hazard warnings were also issued along the California coast.
According to the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) based in Honolulu, Hawaii, there is a risk of waves up to 3 meters high could hit the coastal areas of Russia, Hawaii and even Ecuador and Chile along the west coast of South America.
