Since 1947, just two years after the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, every time the War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27) is celebrated, activities of care and extensive propaganda have been held across the country to raise awareness and fully implement the Party and State's policies and guidelines on preferential treatment for people with revolutionary contributions.
Every year, July 27 is an important commemorative day of profound human significance. It is an occasion for the entire Party, people and army to respectfully remember and pay tribute to revolutionary predecessors, heroic martyrs, and outstanding sons of the nation who bravely fought and heroically sacrificed; and to show gratitude to wounded soldiers who devoted part of their blood and bones to the cause of national liberation and reunification, and to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.
Of course, the morality of "filial piety and charity", "When drinking water, remember its source", "Repaying gratitude", "When eating fruit, remember the person who planted the tree" of our nation does not only take place in July, on July 27, but that morality lasts forever, throughout time and years.
July is truly the peak time for the whole country to deeply understand the value of sacrifices and great contributions of heroic martyrs and wounded soldiers to the country. July is an opportunity for each of us to do practical work and actions to contribute to expressing gratitude to wounded soldiers, families of martyrs and those with meritorious services.

This July is certainly no exception. The Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs issued a Plan to organize commemorative activities to propagate and synchronously implement policies and laws on preferential treatment for people with revolutionary contributions. Key activities include: Focusing on completing documents guiding the implementation of the Ordinance on Preferential Treatment for People with Revolutionary Contributions; Amending and supplementing the Decree detailing the Ordinance on Preferential Treatment for People with Revolutionary Contributions, expected to be submitted to the Government in the fourth quarter of 2024; Amending and supplementing the Decree stipulating the levels of benefits, allowances and preferential treatment for people with revolutionary contributions, along with reforming salary policies; Organizing intimate meetings with representatives of Heroes of the People's Armed Forces, Heroes of Labor during the resistance war who have made many contributions to the revolutionary cause, relatives of exemplary martyrs who have made many contributions to the revolutionary cause, fighting, protecting and building the Fatherland; Organize visits and present gifts to people with meritorious services and relatives of people with meritorious services to the revolution in localities and centers for nurturing and caring for people with meritorious services to the revolution; Propose the implementation of the Project to collect samples of remains of martyrs whose information has not been identified at all martyr cemeteries, and collect control samples of martyrs' relatives...
Notably, at the Conference to honor people with meritorious services on the morning of July 23, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and delegates pressed the activation button, officially launching the "gene bank (DNA) of martyrs and relatives of martyrs whose information has not been identified" with the aim of identifying 300,000 "anonymous" remains. The Prime Minister mentioned the goal of soon completing the identification of more than 20,000 martyrs' remains, striving to identify 60% of martyrs in cemeteries... That is the initial milestone that opens up great hope for more than 300,000 families of people with meritorious services, identifying the identities of more than 300,000 martyrs' remains in cemeteries across the country...
Throughout the history of building and defending the country of our nation, our Party, State, army and people have always deeply remembered the sacrifices and great contributions of heroic martyrs and war invalids and have always paid attention to doing a good job for war invalids, war invalids and people with meritorious services to the revolution, organizing the entire population to actively participate in the movements: "Repaying gratitude", "The entire population taking care of families of war invalids, war invalids and people with meritorious services to the revolution" with many specific and practical activities, such as: Building gratitude houses, establishing a gratitude fund, supporting Vietnamese heroic mothers, stabilizing the lives of war invalids and seriously ill soldiers, taking care of the elderly, lonely parents of war invalids and children of war invalids... Those meaningful, deeply humane and very simple activities contribute a small part to lessening the irreparable loss and pain.
The war is long gone. The past is history. History must never be forgotten or traded. Our country has gone through too much loss and pain. No one wants a history of tragedy, mourning, and suffering to repeat itself. We are always ready to protect national sovereignty at all costs, from early on, from afar.
I had the opportunity to visit many martyrs’ cemeteries in several localities across the country. Throughout all 63 provinces and cities, every locality has martyrs’ cemeteries and works honoring martyrs. Every time, I was moved, overwhelmed with emotion, silently watching the “Fatherland’s Gratitude” monument, rows of tombstones, especially the “graves of unknown martyrs”, “graves of martyrs with unidentified information”. Last May, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory, after respectfully and emotionally visiting the A1 National Martyrs’ Cemetery, we went to A1 hill where the words “mud – blood and flowers” stood out in bright red.
When I heard the tour guide speak softly, but everyone could hear it clearly, that under the feet of every tourist who was walking and standing, anywhere could be the remains of martyrs. Suddenly, I remembered the original poem "Boat up Thach Han" by poet Le Ba Duong, consisting of only 4 lines: "Boat up Thach Han, row gently/ At the bottom of the river, my friend still lies/ At the age of twenty, blending with the waves/ Lapping the shore forever and ever" . The feeling of goosebumps appeared, my footsteps gently reminded me, and my emotions surged.
Certainly, that is also the mood and feeling of everyone, so that everyone can appreciate more what the generations of fathers and grandfathers have sacrificed, leaving a part of their blood and bones for our country to have peace, independence, freedom and development as today. To understand more deeply the morality of "When drinking water, remember its source", "Repaying gratitude" of our nation. To remind each of us of the tradition of patriotism, national pride, of the responsibility to live, work, study, build and protect the Fatherland to be worthy of the great sacrifices of generations of fathers and brothers before. For each person to live and work with full responsibility, to contribute a small part to help our country continue to maintain, to be worthy, to continue the milestone, the source that has been firmly built is "never before had the potential, position and international prestige like today".
