Spanish public opinion was shocked when the media reported that a German man named Christian Steffen (53 years old) and his wife - Melissa Ann (48 years old) - were accused of forcing their 3 children to live in complete isolation for nearly 4 years.
Christian Steffen has been renting a villa in the city of Oviedo (Spain) since October 2021. Earlier this May, local police raided the house and discovered terrible living conditions in the Steffen family's residence.
The living space is not cleaned and is very dirty. The children have poor communication and social skills, still have to use diapers and always have to wear 3 layers of medical masks on top of each other.

To hide their unusual lifestyle, the Steffens used a room to store used diapers. According to initial investigations, the police said the Steffens lived in an extreme fear of infection. They used up to five air purifiers in the house, which were turned on all day.
Mr. Steffen is the only one in the family allowed to open the front door of the house to receive orders from a local supermarket.
When the police took them out of the house, the children were surprised. For nearly four years, the living room of the house had been converted into a classroom, and the children were homeschooled under the guidance of their father.
Christian Steffen graduated from the University of Hamburg (Germany) in 2003, holds a doctorate in philosophy and a degree in education. In 2005, he published a book on philosophy. Mr. Steffen worked as a recruiter for several companies in Germany, then became a freelancer in April 2015.
Police in Spain began investigating the Steffen family after receiving complaints from his neighbors. They noticed that the amount of goods and food being delivered to the Steffen home was much larger than the needs of one person, but they never saw anyone leave the door.
The representative of the investigating police force - Mr. Francisco Javier Lozano - said that there are many questions being asked about the Steffen couple: "What caused them to fall into this situation? What made them move to the city of Oviedo and choose this way of life?".
Marta del Arca, a representative of the local welfare agency, said the Directorate for Children and Family Affairs had taken custody of the three children.
The Steffens are currently being investigated for domestic violence, psychological abuse and child neglect. Both have been detained pending further investigation.
