The Airports of Thailand company manages six international airports in the country. They said they received an emergency call at 8:40 a.m. (local time) about a female passenger whose leg was trapped in an escalator at Terminal 2. According to AP, medical personnel who arrived had to amputate the woman's leg above the knee. The woman was then taken to two hospitals for treatment. Attempts were also made to reattach her leg.
At a press conference following the accident, Don Mueang International Airport Director Karun Thanakuljeerapat said the wheels of the victim's suitcase were also found under the escalator conveyor belt. He said Thai authorities would cover the victim's medical treatment and other expenses.
Following the accident, the airport's "automatic walkways" were inspected and their operation was temporarily suspended.
The Airports of Thailand company said its technical team would further investigate the incident. Officials said they have formed a committee to investigate the escalator malfunction.
